Role Description The fractional CFO role at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is a part-time, remote position responsible for providing strategic financial leadership and advisory support. On a day-to-day basis, the fractional CFO will oversee financial planning, interpret and review financial statements, and support long-term budget and resource allocation decisions. The role includes guiding financial reporting processes, ensuring accurate and timely reporting to university leadership, and supporting compliance with relevant policies and regulations. The fractional CFO will analyze financial performance, identify risks and opportunities, and present data-driven recommendations to support institutional priorities. Collaboration with administrative and academic units, participation in virtual strategy meetings, and preparation of clear financial dashboards and summaries are key aspects of this role.
Qualifications
Strong finance and financial planning skills, including experience with budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial modeling.
Expertise in financial statements and financial reporting, with the ability to interpret complex data and communicate insights clearly.
Advanced analytical skills, including proficiency in analyzing trends, evaluating scenarios, and supporting strategic decision-making.
Experience in higher education, public sector, or complex non-profit environments is highly beneficial.
Proficiency with financial systems, data analysis tools, and spreadsheet software.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders in a remote setting.
Proven track record in advisory or fractional/consulting CFO work, including managing part-time engagements across multiple initiatives.
Relevant advanced degree (e.g., MBA, Master’s in Finance, or related field) and/or professional certification such as CPA, CFA, or CMA preferred.
