Database Engineer – GIS Migration (AWS RDS / Aurora PostgreSQL)

We are seeking an experienced Database Engineer to lead the migration and modernization of GIS database platforms to Amazon RDS and Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL. This role requires deep expertise in PostgreSQL architecture, AWS database services, high availability design, and large-scale database migrations from legacy platforms such as Oracle and SQL Server.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement database solutions using Amazon RDS PostgreSQL and Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL.
Lead schema and data migrations from legacy databases (Oracle, SQL Server, etc.) to PostgreSQL.
Configure and optimize PostGIS for GIS and spatial data workloads.
Perform database performance tuning, optimization, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
Architect and implement High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) solutions using:
Aurora Multi-AZ deployments
Read Replicas
Cross-Region Replication
Automated Failover Strategies
Develop and execute database change management processes to support seamless production deployments.
Plan and implement:
Blue/Green Deployments
Logical Replication
Rollback Strategies
Near-Zero Downtime Migrations
Collaborate with cloud, application, and GIS teams to ensure successful platform modernization.
Required Qualifications
Strong hands-on experience with AWS RDS PostgreSQL and Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL.
Proven track record migrating enterprise databases from Oracle and/or SQL Server to PostgreSQL.
Experience configuring and supporting PostGIS environments.
Deep knowledge of PostgreSQL performance tuning and database optimization.
Expertise designing HA/DR solutions in AWS.
Experience with database replication, failover, backup, and recovery strategies.
Strong understanding of database change management and release processes.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
GIS, geospatial, or mapping platform experience.
AWS certifications.
Experience supporting large-scale cloud modernization initiatives.
