Senior Rail Safety Engineer

Summary
As a Senior Rail Safety Engineer, you will serve as the subject matter expert by leading technical aspects and providing team leadership for functional safety engineering projects within the rail industry. Responsibilities encompass conducting safety analyses, offering technical consulting, generating reports, and supporting functional safety programs for rail systems and related infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Manage functional safety rail projects, including project definition, management, budget compliance, schedule adherence, and project reporting. Supervise and manage team members.
Lead safety engineering activities in the rail sector by setting direction for complex projects, developing schedules, and coordinating all phases of work.
Develop safety requirements and safety plans, perform rail safety and hazard analyses, and report on findings.
Review and interpret rail safety regulations and standards. Monitor client safety performance, conduct safety assessments, and assist in regulatory compliance.
Train clients on rail safety program development, performance, documentation, and regulatory acceptance.
Solve complex safety issues related to rail systems and operations.
Manage, train, and mentor Junior Safety Engineers.

Qualifications
8-15 years of experience as a Functional Safety Engineer, preferably with a focus on rail systems such as CBTC, PTC, Solid State Interlockings, and other train control systems.
Experience leading functional safety programs and managing complex engineering projects.
Expertise in technical safety analyses including hazard analyses, risk assessments, FTAs, and RBDs.
Thorough understanding of the safety lifecycle in rail and transportation contexts.
Knowledge of rail industry safety standards and regulations, including FRA and EN 50126/50128/50129.
Experience supporting regulatory compliance and safety assessments for rail systems and infrastructure.
Superior communication abilities, capable of articulating complex technical data in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in technical documentation.
Certifications
Preferred
Functional Safety Expert certificate or equivalent.
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience with IEC 61508.
Work Environment
The Senior Rail Safety Engineer position is fully remote, with occasional required travel to client facilities and rail sites. Work will primarily be conducted from a home office.
