About the role

Description supplied by the original job listing.

Senior Technical Manager – Battery & Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Location: India – Remote
Company: Canadian Battery & Energy Storage Company
Experience: 7+ years preferred
Fixed Compensation: ₹12 LPA + Performance Incentives
Expected Total Compensation: Approx. ₹15 LPA+
Markets: Canada, Europe, India & International
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for an exceptionally strong Battery/BESS technical professional who can help us engineer, develop and commercialize technically superior battery products for international markets.
Technical expertise is the #1 priority for this role.
We are NOT looking for a conventional or relationship-led salesperson whose primary strength is persuasion.
Our philosophy for technical products is different:
Build a technically excellent product that solves the customer's problem, performs reliably and competes strongly — and let the strength of the product make the sale easier.
We therefore need someone who deeply understands battery engineering, battery systems, cells, pack design, BMS, ESS/BESS, inverter integration, communication protocols, diagnostics and competing technologies.
Your job is not simply to sell what we already have.
Your job is to understand the market, study competing products, identify where they are technically better or worse, understand what customers actually need, and work directly with manufacturers and R&D teams to help us build a technically stronger product.
You should be capable of:
Market/Competitor Research → Customer Requirements → Technical Analysis → Manufacturer/R&D Development → Testing & Validation → Product Improvement → Customer Solution → Commercial Success
WHAT YOU WILL OWN
1. Battery Engineering & Product Development
You should have strong practical knowledge of:
• Lithium-ion/LFP and emerging Sodium-ion technologies
• Battery cells, modules and pack architecture/design
• Battery Management Systems (BMS)
• ESS/BESS architecture and integration
• Cell selection and series/parallel configurations
• Voltage, Ah/kWh, C-rates, DoD, SoC/SoH and cycle life
• Cell balancing and protection systems
• Thermal behaviour and thermal management
• Battery safety and failure mechanisms
• CAN/CANBus, RS485/Modbus and other communication protocols
• Battery-to-inverter integration
• Firmware/configuration and monitoring systems
You must be able to read and challenge a technical datasheet, not simply repeat what a manufacturer has written.
2. Competitor & Market Intelligence
A major part of the role is understanding what the best products in the market are doing.
You will:
• Study competing battery/BESS products and technologies
• Compare cells, BMS, specifications, architecture, performance and features
• Understand why customers choose competing products
• Identify technical gaps in our own products
• Monitor developments in LFP, Sodium-ion, BMS and BESS
• Identify features and technologies we should develop
• Benchmark our products against leading competitors
• Recommend product improvements to management and manufacturers
We want someone who continuously asks:
“Why would a technical customer choose our battery over the best alternative?”
And then works with us to make sure there is a strong technical answer.
3. Manufacturer & R&D Coordination
You will be in direct technical contact with our manufacturers, BMS suppliers and R&D teams.
You will:
• Define technical product requirements
• Evaluate cell/BMS/pack configurations
• Challenge unrealistic specifications or claims
• Coordinate product improvements
• Develop custom battery configurations
• Coordinate BMS/firmware modifications
• Review prototypes and test results
• Investigate field failures
• Work with R&D on corrective actions
• Verify technical specifications before publishing datasheets
We need someone technically confident enough to tell a manufacturer:
“This specification does not make engineering sense. Show us the data, explain it, and let's determine the correct solution.”
4. Troubleshooting & Customer Technical Support
You must be capable of independently investigating issues such as:
• Battery unexpectedly shutting down
• Charging/discharging problems
• BMS protection faults
• Incorrect SoC/capacity readings
• Battery-to-inverter communication failures
• CAN/RS485 issues
• App/Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connectivity problems
• Cell imbalance
• Parallel battery communication issues
• Firmware/configuration problems
We expect technical ownership:
Customer Issue → Gather Data → Analyze Logs/BMS → Diagnose Root Cause → Coordinate with Manufacturer/R&D → Implement Solution → Verify Resolution
We do NOT want someone who simply forwards a customer's complaint to the factory.
5. PRODUCT & TECHNOLOGY STRATEGY
You will help management determine:
• Which battery technologies should we pursue?
• Which cells, BMS and manufacturers should we use?
• Which competitor products should we benchmark against?
• Which products should we develop?
• Where are our technical weaknesses?
• What are customers/OEMs demanding?
• Where is battery technology heading?
• How can we build a technically superior product?
You should bring recommendations to management rather than wait for instructions.
6. TECHNICAL SALES & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Commercial ability is important — but technical credibility comes first.
We are not looking for aggressive selling.
We want someone who can sit across the table from an OEM engineer or technical buyer, understand their application in depth and demonstrate why our engineering and product are the right solution.
You will:
• Meet OEMs, EPCs, distributors, integrators and BESS customers
• Understand applications and engineering requirements
• Recommend technically appropriate solutions
• Conduct technical presentations
• Handle technical objections
• Develop OEM relationships
• Support RFQs and techno-commercial proposals
• Support negotiations and closure
• Help develop European and international markets
Existing Battery/BESS/OEM relationships are highly valued.
WORKING WITH OUR CANADIAN TEAM
This is a remote position based in India, working closely with Canadian management, international customers and overseas manufacturers.
Excellent spoken and written English is mandatory.
You will participate in weekly technical, product, management and sales meetings covering:
• Product development
• Competitor research
• Customer technical issues
• Manufacturer/R&D matters
• Product performance
• Major customer opportunities
• New technologies
• OEM development
• Product roadmap
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
7+ years of relevant Battery/BESS/Energy Storage experience preferred.
Exceptional candidates with 5–6 years may be considered where technical expertise is outstanding.
Education: B.E./B.Tech/M.Tech/PhD in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Power Electronics, Energy Systems, Electrochemistry, Battery Technology, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or related discipline.
M.Tech/PhD is highly valued, but demonstrated real-world battery engineering capability matters more than the degree.
THE PERSON WE WANT
We are looking for:
Battery Engineer + Product Thinker + Problem Solver + Customer Expert + Commercial Mindset
Someone who understands:
The objective is not to become better at selling an average battery.
The objective is to understand the market and engineering deeply enough to help us build a battery product that is technically difficult for customers to ignore.
COMPENSATION
₹12 LPA Fixed + Performance/Sales Incentives
Expected total compensation: Approx. ₹15 LPA+, depending on performance.
HOW TO APPLY
Please apply with your CV and briefly answer:
What Battery/BESS systems have you personally engineered or worked with?
Describe a difficult Battery/BMS problem you personally diagnosed and solved.
Which battery/BESS products or companies do you consider technically strong, and why?
What experience do you have working directly with battery manufacturers/R&D teams?
What OEM/customer-facing or international business experience do you have?
Generic sales profiles without substantial Battery/BESS engineering expertise will not be considered.
