Backend Engineer, Premium Billing Platform

As a Backend Engineer in Wix's Premium Billing team, you will help build and evolve the platform that powers subscriptions, billing, and payment flows across Wix products.
The team is building the next generation of Wix's billing infrastructure — a flexible, API-first platform designed to support multiple products, business models, pricing models, and payment providers at scale.
Our systems are responsible for critical parts of the customer lifecycle, including checkout, subscription creation and changes, renewals, invoicing, payment execution, payment-method management, and billing history.
You will work on highly distributed, business-critical systems where correctness, resilience, and backwards compatibility matter. You will also take part in modernizing existing billing flows and gradually migrating large-scale production traffic and subscriptions into the new platform.
In your day-to-day work, you will:
Design and build backend services that power subscriptions, billing, checkout, and payment execution at Wix scale.
Take an active part in shaping the architecture of Wix's next-generation Premium Billing platform.
Design clear, API-first domain models for concepts such as subscriptions, orders, invoices, payment intents, charges, and payment methods.
Build resilient distributed flows using asynchronous processing, events, idempotency, retries, and failure-recovery mechanisms.
Design systems that work across multiple payment providers while keeping the billing platform provider-agnostic.
Solve complex migration and backwards-compatibility challenges while moving existing products and subscriptions onto the new platform.
Improve the reliability and observability of critical production flows using metrics, logs, traces, automated analysis, and data-driven investigation.
Investigate real production behavior and turn operational insights into architectural and product improvements.
Use AI-assisted development tools and automation to accelerate implementation, debugging, testing, code understanding, and production analysis.
Collaborate closely with Product, Payments, Data, Finance, and other Wix platform teams.
Own projects end-to-end — from problem definition and technical design through implementation, rollout, monitoring, and production support.
Contribute to engineering standards through design reviews, code reviews, testing practices, and technical mentoring.
Qualifications:
4+ years of experience building backend systems in production.
Strong software engineering fundamentals and hands-on experience designing complex backend systems.
Experience with distributed systems and microservices architectures.
Strong understanding of API design, domain modeling, Object-Oriented Programming, and SOLID principles.
Experience designing systems for reliability, scalability, consistency, and failure recovery.
Experience working with asynchronous and event-driven architectures.
Strong approach to automated testing, clean code, and maintainable software design.
Ability to investigate complex production issues across multiple services and data sources.
Strong ownership mindset — comfortable taking responsibility for critical systems from design through production.
Curiosity and practical experience using modern AI-assisted engineering tools as part of the development workflow.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
An advantage:
Experience with billing, subscriptions, fintech, payments, or other transaction-heavy systems.
Experience with payment providers such as Stripe, Adyen, Braintree, PayPal, or similar platforms.
Experience with high-volume migrations or modernization of large legacy systems.
Experience with event-driven systems, workflow orchestration, or distributed transaction patterns.
Experience working with large-scale data and observability platforms.
