# Senior Software Engineer I – Automation
## About the Role
Smartsheet is seeking a **Senior Software Engineer I (Automation)** to design, build, and operate enterprise automation systems and AI-enabled workflows that support critical business functions across Finance, Sales/GTM, and People & Culture.
As part of the **Corporate Systems Engineering – Automation** team, you will build human-to-system and system-to-system automations using cloud-native services, agentic AI, and workflow orchestration. You will lead complex technical initiatives, collaborate with Product Management and business stakeholders on technical roadmaps, contribute to architectural decisions, and mentor other engineers.
This is a full-time position reporting to the **Sr. Director, Development**. The role can be based in **Bellevue, Washington**, or remotely from anywhere in the United States where Smartsheet is a registered employer.
## Key Responsibilities
### AI Agents & Automation
* Architect and develop **agentic workflows** using AWS Step Functions and Bedrock Agents to support multi-step business processes.
* Design and implement AI-driven enterprise automation workflows.
* Develop human-in-the-loop automations where **UiPath Action Center** provides a safety gate for AI-driven decisions.
* Optimize RAG performance through vector database indexing and retrieval strategies, including chunking and embeddings.
* Help reduce hallucinations in enterprise search through effective retrieval strategies.
### MCP, APIs & Enterprise Integrations
* Drive implementation of the **Model Context Protocol (MCP)** to standardize how AI interacts with Smartsheet, CRM, and ERP data.
* Develop and work with MCP servers and AI-enabled tools.
* Consume REST APIs developed by Integration and Application Engineering teams.
* Transform enterprise APIs and integrations into user-facing AI tools.
* Apply modern authentication approaches, including OAuth, for secure data retrieval.
### Software Engineering & Architecture
* Design, develop, and operate scalable applications and enterprise-grade integration services.
* Participate in and lead code reviews and architectural discussions.
* Serve as a technical gatekeeper for code quality and system integrity.
* Work autonomously on development aspects of large projects.
* Break technical initiatives into accurate work breakdown plans.
* Provide regular progress and technical feedback to Product Managers and project teams.
* Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on AI prompt engineering, MCP server development, and UiPath practices.
### Reliability & Production Support
* Participate in a weekly production support rotation.
* Own complex production issue resolution.
* Conduct root-cause analysis and implement improvements that increase system resiliency.
* Use observability platforms such as **Datadog and CloudWatch** to monitor system health and troubleshoot production environments.
### Product & Agile Collaboration
* Partner with Product Managers and business stakeholders to translate business objectives into technical roadmaps.
* Collaborate across engineering teams to deliver integrated automation solutions.
* Drive and participate in Agile/Scrum processes.
* Help refine team velocity and support consistent delivery of high-impact features.
## Required Qualifications
* **5+ years of experience** building highly scalable applications or enterprise-grade integration services.
* **5+ years of programming experience** with modern languages such as:
* JavaScript/Node.js
* TypeScript
* Python
* Advanced AWS experience with:
* AWS Step Functions
* Amazon EventBridge
* Amazon SQS/SNS
* **1+ year of experience** building AI features using Generative AI or agentic workflows with measurable business impact.
* Deep knowledge of **Model Context Protocol (MCP)**.
* Strong experience with **REST APIs** and modern authentication, including OAuth.
* Expertise with **UiPath Integration Service and Action Center**.
* Expertise with observability platforms such as **Datadog or CloudWatch**.
* Experience troubleshooting production-grade environments and conducting root-cause analysis.
* Ability to work autonomously on large projects and develop accurate work breakdown plans.
* Strong collaboration and communication skills with Product Management and project stakeholders.
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical industry experience.
* Legally eligible to work in the United States on an ongoing basis.

## Compensation & Benefits
**US Base Salary Pay Range: $145,000 – $193,750 USD**
The role is also eligible for a market-competitive incentive opportunity. Actual compensation may vary based on professional and educational experience, skills, and candidate location.
