About The Stepping Stones Group
The Stepping Stones Group (SSG) is on a mission to transform lives by empowering and supporting families and children seeking therapeutic and behavioral health services in schools, homes, and clinic settings. SSG operates across 48 states, serves more than 1,300 school districts and reaches approximately 200,000 children annually.
With over 30 years of experience, the company employs more than 11,000 professionals committed to delivering high-quality therapeutic and behavioral services. SSG is investor-backed and focused on continued expansion through organic growth and acquisitions.
The Opportunity
SSG is seeking a Vice President of Finance to serve as the strategic financial leader for its roughly $200 million Behavioral & Instructional Supports (BIS) division.
Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Finance and partnering closely with the BIS President and leadership team, the Vice President will serve as the division’s primary financial advisor. You will strengthen and scale the existing FP&A infrastructure, apply best practices across planning and reporting, and translate financial and operational data into clear recommendations that improve performance and support growth.
The Vice President will own budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, profitability analysis, KPI development, and performance reporting for the practice. You will also lead quarterly business reviews with the CFO and other C-suite executives, support financial diligence for potential acquisitions, and own post-close finance integration.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who can operate strategically while remaining close to the details. The Vice President will lead through influence across a geographically distributed organization.
Key Responsibilities
Lead long-term financial and strategic planning for the BIS practice, incorporating market dynamics, payer and school district trends, and operational scalability.
Develop return-on-investment models for expansions, new programs, and strategic initiatives.
Serve as the primary financial partner and advisor to BIS leadership, interpreting financial and operational trends to shape strategy and execution.
Own the annual budget and monthly, quarterly, and annual rolling forecast processes.
Evaluate financial results against budget, explain performance drivers, and assess the effect of recurring trends and one-time events on projected results.
Partner with the CFO and Senior Vice President of Finance on monthly performance reviews.
Lead quarterly business reviews with the CFO, BIS President, and other C-suite executives, presenting results, forecast changes, risks, opportunities, and recommended actions.
Strengthen consistent operating benchmarks, KPIs, and dashboards covering revenue, direct and gross margin, payer mix, district mix, therapy mix, and operating expenses.
Build and maintain financial models supporting forecasting, profitability analysis, cash-flow planning, scenario analysis, and strategic decision-making.
Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, data sources, reporting accuracy, efficiency, and transparency.
Support financial due diligence for potential acquisitions, including analysis of historical performance, operating metrics, assumptions, risks, and opportunities.
Lead post-close finance integration for acquired businesses, including reporting, budgeting and forecasting, KPI alignment, data integration, and the standardization of financial processes and controls.
Candidate Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field required; MBA, CPA, or CFA preferred.
At least 10 years of progressive finance and FP&A experience.
At least three years of experience leading and developing teams at the manager or director level.
Demonstrated experience serving as a senior financial partner to business-unit or executive leadership.
Healthcare experience required; multi-site healthcare-services experience strongly preferred.
FP&A leadership experience in a high-growth organization; experience in a private equity-backed environment preferred.
Experience supporting financial due diligence and leading post-close finance integration preferred.
Advanced financial modeling skills and a strong understanding of financial reporting and cash-flow dynamics.
Experience using data and business intelligence tools to improve reporting, forecasting, and decision-making.
Exceptional Excel skills; Oracle PBCS/EPM and healthcare practice-management platform experience are strongly preferred.
Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly and present decision-oriented recommendations to senior executives.
A hands-on, detail-oriented leadership style, balanced by strong business judgment and the ability to think strategically.
Who Should Consider This Role
