About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
A Quantum Memory Engineer (or Quantum Memory Physicist/Scientist) designs, builds, and optimizes hardware that records, stores, and retrieves fragile quantum states without breaking their quantum properties.
Role Overview
This specialized engineering and research role bridges quantum optics, atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physics, and solid-state materials. The main goal is creating reliable quantum memory modules—a critical building block for scaling quantum networks, distributed quantum computing, and quantum repeaters.
Key Responsibilities
Build and Operate Testbeds: Own day-to-day operations of quantum memory testbeds and cryogenic or sub-Kelvin hardware setups.
Run Experiments: Execute pulsed optical and microwave/RF experiments to manipulate electron-nuclear spin registers or light-matter interfaces.
Model and Simulate: Simulate device parameters like absorption, storage efficiency, and added noise using tools like COMSOL, Lumerical, Python, or MATLAB.
System Integration: Integrate memory modules with broader hardware setups such as lasers, single-photon detectors, modulators, and telecommunication networks.
Documentation and R&D: Record scientific results, contribute to peer- reviewed journals, file patent applications, and support field trials.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education: Typically requires a Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a closely related field.
Technical Expertise: Hands-on experience with solid-state quantum systems (like diamond color centers or rare-earth-doped materials) or atomic vapor cells.
Lab Skills: Proficiency in laser spectroscopy, quantum optical characterization, cryogenic systems, and microwave/RF control sequences (e.g., Rabi, Ramsey oscillations).
