About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Director of Technical Accounting to join Consensys and lead the interpretation and implementation of complex accounting standards across the organization. This individual will serve as the company's subject-matter expert on U.S. GAAP, partnering closely with Finance, Legal, FP&A, and business teams to ensure accurate, compliant, and well-documented accounting treatment for complex and non-routine transactions — including transactions involving digital assets and blockchain-based products. This is a highly visible role with direct exposure to senior leadership and external auditors.
Key Responsibilities
Research, interpret, and apply new and existing accounting standards (e.g., revenue recognition (ASC 606), leases (ASC 842), business combinations (ASC 805), stock-based compensation (ASC 718), debt and equity instruments, consolidation, and impairment) to company-specific transactions.
Evaluate and document accounting treatment for digital asset and crypto-related transactions, including holdings, token issuances, staking, and other blockchain-native arrangements, applying ASC 350-60 (crypto assets) and other relevant guidance.
Draft clear, well-supported technical accounting memos and position papers for complex or judgmental transactions, including new products, M&A activity, financing arrangements, and other non-routine events.
Monitor emerging accounting guidance issued by the FASB, SEC, and PCAOB; assess impact on the company; and lead implementation of new standards, including drafting accounting policies and coordinating cross-functional rollout.
Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors on technical accounting matters, leading discussions and resolving complex issues efficiently.
Partner with Legal, Treasury, Revenue, FP&A, and business unit leaders to evaluate the accounting implications of new contracts, deal structures, and strategic initiatives before they close.
Support M&A activity, including purchase accounting, due diligence, and post-acquisition integration from a technical accounting perspective.
Develop, maintain, and update the company's accounting policy manual, ensuring policies remain current and are consistently applied across the organization.
Assess internal controls related to complex accounting areas and partner with Internal Controls/SOX teams to ensure adequate control design and operation.
Present technical accounting matters to senior leadership and, as needed, the Audit Committee.
Partner directly with the Chief Accounting Officer and engage with industry working groups, standard-setters, and peer companies to help shape emerging positions on cutting-edge accounting standards affecting digital assets and the broader industry.
Mentor and develop accounting staff, building technical accounting capability across the broader finance organization.
Assist with SEC reporting (10-K/10-Q) disclosures related to technical accounting areas, as applicable.
Qualifications
Required:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
CPA license (active and in good standing).
12+ years of progressive accounting experience, including significant experience in public accounting (Big 4 or national firm) and/or a technical accounting role in industry.
Deep, current knowledge of U.S. GAAP with demonstrated experience researching and documenting complex technical accounting positions.
Strong understanding of SEC reporting requirements (for public companies) or equivalent stakeholder reporting needs.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex accounting concepts for non-accounting audiences.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred:
Experience with digital assets/cryptocurrency accounting, including familiarity with ASC 350-60, token economics, DeFi, staking, and other blockchain-native transaction structures.
Public company experience, including direct interaction with external auditors.
Experience with M&A transaction accounting and purchase accounting.
Experience with system implementations affecting accounting processes (e.g., ERP, revenue systems).
Prior people-management or mentorship experience.
Experience in the blockchain, Web3, or fintech industry a plus.

The salary range listed for this role applies to US-based candidates only. Compensation for candidates based outside the US (including Canada, EMEA, and LATAM) will be determined based on location, experience, and skills during the interview process, and may differ from the listed US range.
