Director of Project Management

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and results-oriented Director of Project Management to lead the company’s project management function and ensure the successful planning, execution, and delivery of strategic and operational initiatives.
The Director of Project Management will oversee project portfolios, establish effective project management practices, improve delivery processes, and work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure projects remain aligned with business objectives, timelines, budgets, and quality expectations.
This role requires a strong combination of strategic thinking, operational discipline, project leadership, and communication skills. The successful candidate will be comfortable working with executives, project managers, functional leaders, clients, and other stakeholders to manage priorities and drive consistent project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement the company’s project management strategy, standards, processes, and governance framework.
Lead and oversee a portfolio of strategic, operational, technology, and cross-functional projects.
Establish project planning, execution, monitoring, reporting, and closeout practices.
Ensure projects are appropriately scoped, scheduled, resourced, and aligned with organizational priorities.
Develop project plans, milestones, deliverables, budgets, resource requirements, and performance expectations.
Monitor project progress and provide regular updates to executive leadership and key stakeholders.
Identify project risks, dependencies, issues, and potential schedule or budget impacts.
Establish effective risk management, issue resolution, and escalation processes.
Work with project managers and functional leaders to address delivery challenges and maintain project momentum.
Oversee project budgets, resource utilization, forecasts, and financial performance.
Develop and monitor project management KPIs and performance dashboards.
Improve project reporting and provide leadership with clear visibility into portfolio performance.
Establish consistent project documentation, templates, workflows, and operating procedures.
Evaluate project management processes and identify opportunities for greater efficiency and consistency.
Lead project prioritization and resource allocation discussions across departments.
Coordinate dependencies between projects, departments, vendors, and other stakeholders.
Partner with Finance, Operations, Technology, Product, Sales, Customer Service, and other teams as required.
Manage relationships with external vendors, consultants, and implementation partners when applicable.
Ensure project deliverables meet defined quality, scope, timeline, and business requirements.
Support organizational change initiatives and major business transformation projects.
Promote effective communication and accountability throughout the project lifecycle.
Establish project governance practices appropriate for the size, complexity, and importance of each initiative.
Lead post-project reviews to identify lessons learned and improve future project execution.
Manage, mentor, and develop project management professionals and establish clear performance expectations.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Project Management, Business Administration, Operations, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.
8+ years of progressive experience in project management, program management, operations, or a related discipline.
3+ years of experience managing project managers, program managers, or project management teams.
Demonstrated experience managing multiple complex projects or a significant project portfolio.
Strong knowledge of project planning, scheduling, budgeting, resource management, risk management, and performance reporting.
Experience developing project management methodologies, processes, standards, and governance practices.
Strong understanding of project financial management and resource planning.
Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with executive leadership and cross-functional stakeholders.
Strong negotiation and conflict-resolution skills.
Experience managing competing priorities and complex project dependencies.
Strong understanding of project management tools and business systems.
Ability to work independently and maintain effective communication within a fully remote organization.
Preferred Qualifications
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is a plus.
Program Management Professional (PgMP) or other relevant project management certification is a plus.
Experience with Agile, Scrum, Waterfall, or hybrid project management methodologies.
Experience with project management platforms such as Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, Asana, Monday.com, Jira, or similar systems.
Experience managing enterprise-wide initiatives or complex cross-functional programs.
Experience with technology implementations, business process improvements, organizational transformation, or operational initiatives.
Experience developing project portfolio dashboards and executive-level reporting.
Strong understanding of project governance, resource capacity planning, and portfolio prioritization.
Experience managing external partners, consultants, and implementation vendors.
Leadership Responsibilities
The Director of Project Management will provide leadership and direction to the project management organization, establish consistent standards, and support the professional development of project management team members.
This position will also work closely with senior leadership to evaluate project priorities, resource requirements, delivery risks, and overall portfolio performance.
The Director will be expected to establish a structured but practical project management environment that enables teams to execute effectively while maintaining appropriate visibility and accountability.

Work Environment
This is a fully remote position available to candidates located within the United States. The role requires regular collaboration with project teams, functional leaders, executives, clients, vendors, and other stakeholders through video conferencing, email, project management platforms, and other digital communication tools.
The successful candidate should be comfortable managing multiple priorities, leading distributed teams, and maintaining clear communication across a remote organization.
