We are currently searching for a Mobility Principal Engineer to join our team. This role will be performed on-site and is based at our location in North Billerica, MA. Please note: There is no relocation offered for this role. The ideal candidate will currently reside in the Greater Boston area.
JOB SUMMARY
The Mobility Principal Engineer will provide technical leadership for the architecture design, development, integration, verification for an MRI Mobility Subsystem. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and precise movement of an MRI system within the operating room environment.
The mobility subsystem is considered a highly complex safety-critical electro-mechanical system involving coordinated hardware and software control, functional safety, collision avoidance, MR safety controls, fault management, and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate will serve as the primary technical authority for all mobility-related engineering activities throughout the NPI program.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Mechanical Design & Development
Lead the design and development of mechanical subsystems for an MRI system.
Develop mobility mechanisms, patient handling systems, equipment supports and structural assemblies.
Design and optimize cable routing solutions for signal, power, cooling, and RF-related components.
Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, assemblies, and design documentation.
Utilize rapid prototyping and 3D printing technologies to support concept evaluation, functional testing and design verification.
System Integration
Collaborate closely with Electrical, RF, Magnet, Gradient, Software Engineering teams to ensure successful system integration.
Resolve mechanical and electro-mechanical integration challenges during prototype builds.
Support design reviews and cross-functional technical discussions.
Develop and execute mechanical verification test plans and protocols.
Perform structural, vibration, shock, thermal, durability, transportation and lifecycle testing.
Regulatory & Quality Compliance
Support compliance with applicable medical device standards, including:
IEC 60601-1 Medical Electrical Equipment Safety
ISO 14971 Risk Management
Generate and maintain Design History File (DHF) documentation.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Reports to the Head of MRI Development
This role does not supervise any other employees.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications
BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
10+ years of experience developing complex electro-mechanical systems.
Demonstrated experience leading safety-critical motion-control systems.
Strong expertise in:
Mobility system architecture
Motorized motion systems
Electro-mechanical integration
Functional safety
System verification and validation
Experience with medical devices, robotics, automation, or heavy mobile equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
MRI, CT, Surgical Robotics, Radiation Therapy, or Medical Imaging experience.
Experience with dockable patient tables, moving gantries, autonomous or semi-autonomous mobility systems.
Knowledge of:
IEC 60601-1
IEC 60601-1-6
ISO 14971
Functional safety principles
Experience supporting FDA 510(k) submissions and design controls.
