The Senior Manager, Global Digital & Technology Systems Engineering is a hands-on technical delivery role within the Systems Engineering capability area, reporting to the Senior Director, Global Digital & Technology Systems Engineering. This role is responsible for executing assigned systems engineering activities across R&D systems, externally developed platforms, integrations, and foundational ML, AI, genAI patterns.
The role translates defined technical standards, architecture direction, implementation plans, and operational expectations into reliable delivery across assigned systems and workstreams. The Senior Manager partners with Global Technology Solutions (Enterprise IT), vendors, R&D stakeholders, and GRDTS peers to ensure solutions align with enterprise infrastructure, cybersecurity, identity management, cloud, operational, and compliance standards.
The Senior Manager contributes practical systems engineering expertise across hybrid cloud, SaaS, high-performance computing (HPC), containerized environments, data pipeline integration, platform observability, and emerging AI architecture patterns including Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), secure AI gateway patterns, agentic workflow orchestration, and multi-modal integration patterns. The role focuses on delivery quality, documentation, issue resolution, operational readiness, and sustained technical supportability.
A successful candidate brings strong technical execution skills, pharmaceutical / biotechnology domain awareness, disciplined delivery practices, and the ability to coordinate day-to-day work across business, vendor, Enterprise IT, and technical contributors. The Senior Manager is expected to raise risks and dependencies early, provide transparent execution updates, and help ensure assigned systems engineering work is scalable, secure, compliant, and fit for R&D scientific and business use.

Essential Functions Of The Job
Enterprise IT Alignment & Collaboration
Execute assigned tasks within the Enterprise IT engagement model, coordinating with Global Technology Solutions to align R&D solutions with infrastructure, cybersecurity, identity management, cloud platform, and operational standards.
Support technical design reviews, implementation dependency tracking, access / environment coordination, and issue resolution with Enterprise IT, vendors, and R&D stakeholders.
Document specialized R&D technical needs, constraints, risks, and exceptions for review by the Associate Director and Senior Director.
Platforms & Systems Engineering
Manage assigned systems engineering activities across on-premises, hybrid cloud, vendor-hosted, and multi-tenant SaaS environments, applying standards established for the Systems Engineering capability area.
Develop and maintain technical documentation, integration designs, deployment plans, environment details, runbooks, and platform lifecycle artifacts for assigned systems or workstreams.
Coordinate secure data, digital, and technology integration activities that connect third-party platforms, internal systems, and scientific data flows across defined R&D processes.
Implement observability, telemetry, monitoring, alerting, and supportability practices for assigned systems to improve reliability, performance, and operational readiness.
Support configuration, deployment, validation readiness, and operational handoff activities for high-performance computing clusters, containerized environments, storage layers, data lakes, and pipelines supporting compute-heavy R&D use cases.
Track and execute technical lifecycle activities for assigned systems, including patch coordination, release preparation, codebase / configuration documentation, automated deployment inputs, and transition to steady-state support.
Foundational AI Architectures & Workflow Patterns
Implement assigned components of RAG architectures, vector store integrations, semantic retrieval layers, chunking strategies, and AI-enabled systems under the direction of the Associate Director and Senior Director.
Support reusable implementation patterns for agentic AI workflows, secure AI gateway integrations, multi-agent orchestration, and integration controls consistent with enterprise security and intellectual property protections.
Assist in engineering integration patterns that allow systems to ingest, process, and reason across diverse data types and multi-modal inputs and outputs while maintaining appropriate controls and compliance expectations.
Change Management & Digital Adoption
Execute technical change activities for assigned infrastructure modernization, cloud migration, integration, and platform adoption workstreams in collaboration with Global Technology Solutions and R&D stakeholders.
Prepare and maintain technical impact assessments, adoption inputs, cutover checklists, support handoff materials, and release readiness documentation for leadership review.
Help teams apply consistent integration standards, system documentation practices, and operational readiness expectations across assigned technology workstreams.
Governance & Risk Mitigation
Apply architecture, security, compliance, and operational controls for assigned systems, including data protection expectations, secure AI gateway patterns, sandboxing requirements, and vendor risk inputs.
Identify, document, and escalate technical risks, architectural constraints, support gaps, compliance considerations, and execution dependencies to the Associate Director and Senior Director.
Coordinate with audit, compliance, CSV, cybersecurity, Enterprise IT, and vendor partners to support applicable pharmaceutical industry, GxP, computer systems validation, and internal policy requirements.
Operational Excellence, Compliance & Governance
Maintain disciplined use of engineering documentation, technical decision records, risk logs, implementation checklists, support artifacts, and operational handoff materials for assigned work.
Ensure assigned systems and platforms are implemented and operated in line with relevant pharmaceutical regulations, internal policies, security standards, and validation expectations.
Collaboration & Partnership
Collaborate with R&D functional teams, Enterprise IT, vendors, and GRDTS peers to execute workstream objectives and improve delivery quality.
Provide clear status, issue, dependency, and decision updates to the Associate Director and Senior Director to support transparency and timely leadership action.
Supervisory Alignment
Reports to the Senior Director, Global Digital & Technology Systems Engineering; works in close coordination with the Associate Director on assigned workstream priorities, standards, and execution expectations.
No direct line-management responsibilities are required for this role. Provides day-to-day technical coordination for assigned systems engineering workstreams, project contributors, vendor resources, and matrixed technical teams.
Coaches team members and partners on systems engineering practices, technical documentation, integration standards, observability, operational readiness, and compliance expectations.
Key Capabilities
Enterprise-to-R&D Infrastructure Execution: Applying Enterprise IT standards to assigned R&D platform designs and escalating specialized research requirements, risks, and exceptions through the Associate Director and Senior Director.
External Platform Technical Assessment: Supporting technical assessment of vendor and externally developed platforms for scalability, security, architecture quality, integration readiness, supportability, and alignment with Enterprise standards.
Internal & Vendor Platform Integration: Coordinating secure and maintainable integration activities that connect internal applications, scientific workflows, data pipelines, and third-party platforms.
Full-Ecosystem Observability & Reliability: Implementing monitoring, telemetry, alert routing, runbooks, and support readiness practices for assigned internal and vendor-hosted applications.
Advanced Compute & AI Architecture Implementation: Supporting implementation of cloud, high-performance computing, RAG pipeline, secure AI gateway, and agentic workflow patterns within approved architecture direction.
Technical Governance & Execution Discipline: Applying unified architecture standards and maintaining reusable documentation, templates, and engineering artifacts for assigned systems and workstreams.
