Who We Are
BioMarin is a leading rare disease biotechnology company focused on genetically defined conditions.
Guided by our purpose to develop medicines that make a profound impact on people’s lives, our global teams have delivered a portfolio of therapies since our founding in 1997. Our revolutionary treatments for conditions like achondroplasia (the most common form of dwarfism), PKU (phenylketonuria), CLN2, a form of Batten disease, and a number of forms of MPS (mucopolysaccharidosis) offer new possibilities for patients and families who previously had few, if any, available options. More recently, with the close of the Amicus acquisition, our portfolio has expanded to include therapies for Fabry disease and Pompe disease, expanding our ability to reach more people living with rare genetic conditions.
Our success comes from our unwavering commitment to excellence, our deep understanding of patient needs, our scientific expertise, and our world-class manufacturing capabilities. At the heart of BioMarin is a dedicated team of the brightest minds in the industry working together to deliver innovative therapies to patients and families around the world.

About the Role
The Associate Director, Access Strategy owns execution of the integrated access plan and the access customer campaign across BioMarin’s U.S. portfolio, supporting both Skeletal Conditions and Metabolic Business Units. This person will translate access insights into an access narrative that payer, provider, and field channels all execute against. This individual will be responsible for accessing and analyzing different data sets and transforming access insights into access strategies.
The role also supports the operating rhythm of the access function: how the plan is built, how progress is measured, and how performance is communicated back to Brand, Commercial leadership and the Business Units. It works in partnership with Business Operations & Strategy and Business Insights, who remain the enterprise owners of analytics execution and data infrastructure. This role is the access business partner responsible for curating and defining the critical access questions: It defines what needs to be understood, brings the access and channel context that makes the output usable, and converts the result into a campaign, a recommendation, or a decision.
Success in this role looks like an access organization that is insight-driven and forward looking: a unified access message across all access segments, a defined play ready before the market event arrives, and access decisions that are evaluated before they are made rather than explained afterward.
Reporting Relationship and Scope
Reports to: Sr. Director, Payer Access, Value & Evidence, U.S.
Scope: U.S., pan-portfolio, supporting both Business Units and the commercialized and near-term launch portfolio
Level: Associate Director
Direct reports: None initially; leads cross-functional teams, agencies and vendor partners
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Integrated access strategy and campaign
Build and manage the annual market access engagement plan across both Business Units, coordinating customer communications, asset development, and channel activity against brand milestones, payer decision cycles, policy dates, and launch timing.
Support the development and maintenance of response playbooks for key market access events, including competitive launches, payer policy changes, formulary and utilization management updates, channel disruptions, and pricing actions. Partner cross-functionally to ensure stakeholder alignment, field readiness, and consistent execution in response to market access developments.
Lead the development of customer-facing access resources end to end, from message concept through agency briefing, Medical, Legal and Regulatory review, launch, and field readiness, in partnership with Brand Marketing and the customer engagement teams.
Translate access strategy into clear direction for the field access and account teams, and partner with Sales and Field leadership to ensure the campaign is executed consistently in the field.
Manage agency and vendor partners supporting access message development, customer research, and campaign execution, including scope, budget and performance.
Access planning, decision support and operations
Partner cross-functionally to align on performance measures and ensure consistent application across the organization by defining and maintaining an access performance framework: the metrics that constitute access success across payer coverage, patient access rates, time to therapy, persistence, program utilization, and channel performance.
Build reusable evaluation frameworks that allow access, program and contracting options to be compared on a consistent basis before commitments are made, including the trade-offs, assumptions and expected outcomes of each option.
Translate access performance data into actionable insights and recommendations, identifying emerging trends, risks, and opportunities to support market access strategy, contracting decisions, and operational improvements.
Manage the access business review rhythm, including the content, cadence, and narrative used to communicate access performance and outlook to Brand teams, Business Unit leadership and Commercial leadership.
Experience and Educational Requirements
8+ years of biopharmaceutical or healthcare industry experience, including 4+ years of market access, access marketing, access analytics, hub services, or payer access.
Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
Demonstrated experience building and executing customer-facing access, pull-through or reimbursement campaigns, including responsibility for message development and Medical, Legal and Regulatory review.
Working fluency with access and channel data sources, including specialty pharmacy and distributor data, patient hub and case management data, co-pay and patient assistance program data, and claims or dispense data, with the ability to work in the data directly and to recognize the limitations of each source.
Strong command of the U.S. payer environment, including commercial and government payers, utilization management, buy and bill and specialty pharmacy pathways, accumulators and maximizers, and manufacturer patient support programs.
Track record of setting strategy and driving execution across a matrixed organization without direct authority over the functions that execute.
Experience translating quantitative and qualitative inputs into a clear recommendation that a commercial leader can act on.
Rare disease, specialty, or launch experience.
Experience managing agencies, vendors, and external partners, including budget ownership.
Preferred Experience
Experience supporting multiple brands or a portfolio simultaneously rather than a single product.
Prior brand marketing or commercial strategy experience in addition to access.
Experience with limited distribution or rare disease products.
Familiarity with visualization and reporting tools such as Power BI or Tableau, and with syndicated data sources such as IQVIA, Symphony, or Komodo.
Experience with Veeva, Salesforce.com, and MLR workflow systems.
Experience managing vendors, including marketing agencies.
Minimum Skills, Knowledge, and Ability Requirements
Strong strategic thinking, with the ability to move between a long-range plan and the specific asset or decision in front of the team.
Strong analytical skills, including comfort with structuring an ambiguous business question, defining what would answer it, and interpreting the result in commercial terms.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to build a clear narrative for senior leadership and a practical set of directions for a field team.
Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to run multiple concurrent workstreams across two Business Units.
Strong influencing and partnership skills in a highly matrixed environment.
Technical knowledge of healthcare from a patient and provider perspective, including coverage, coding, billing, and appeals processes.
Strong knowledge and understanding of compliance with HIPAA regulations, OIG guidance, advertising and promotion requirements, the Anti-Kickback Statute, and applicable policies, best practices, and guidelines.
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of productivity tools.
Travel up to 25% of the time, including field rides, customer meetings, national congresses, and internal planning meetings.
