Purpose
Exercises daily direct supervisory control and responsibility over assigned shift personnel to provide essential security support and administration for Applied Research Laboratories at the University of Texas (ARL:UT) to observe, monitor, report and respond to security threats, alarms and emergencies to protect employees, secure facilities and safeguard sensitive and classified information and research.
Responsibilities
Safeguard classified and controlled unclassified information.
Assume responsibility for all defined, implied and necessary actions their shift does or fails to do. Complete shift changeover with outgoing shift, relay/receive relevant information, tasks, or expectations. Account for keys, badges, post associated equipment, and report and document any discrepancies as per SOP.
Perform effective access control. Ensure only authorized persons and items enter (or depart) the premises. Identify employees, visitors, check badges and issue temporary badges. Conduct random inspections. Control vehicle access to facility and utilize vehicle reservation system for staff use/recovery of lab vehicles.
Immediately respond to alarms. Prevent theft /sabotage attempts. Perform periodic security patrols, specific security checks and report actual or potential safety and fire hazards.
Observe and report conditions or situations which may lead to increased risks or other dangers. Ensure strict compliance with established procedures related to emergency response, medical response or urgent actions. Assist in other aspects of facility protection through other assigned duties required to support ARL operations.
Perform roles and functions, and coordinate with other Shift Supervisors as part of a larger team. Interact with employees, visitors and guests to provide courteous, professional assistance to personnel on site.
Complete various log entries and forms as official records and documentation and take responsibility for submitting records and documentation with completeness, timeliness and accuracy. Make telephonic and email notifications relevant to ARL:UT security status. Answer incoming telephone calls, effectively operate computer systems, utilize email, monitor closed circuit video monitoring equipment, operate fax machine, and utilize ARL:UT public address system. Receive and document after hour mail deliveries.
Exercise daily direct supervisory control and responsibility over assigned shift personnel. Provide essential security support/administration. Assist Guard Force Manager and Physical Security Manager with general supervision & responsibility over assigned shift of guards at ARL:UT. Conduct supervisory functions in accordance with UT & ARL standards, performing and documenting initial, probationary and recurring feedbacks, annual performance appraisals and performs corrective and progressive disciplinary action as appropriate.
Know and enforce the duties, responsibilities and post limits for each assigned post during the shift. Work off-site at Lake Travis Test Station (LTTS) and communicate with, coordinate and support the LTTS guards daily and as necessary.
Assists the guard force manager and scheduler with generating a sustainable work schedule to ensure shift staffing needs are met, while complying with HR policies for OT, vacation, sick leave and paid time-off.
Complete ARL Time Sheets in Workday as direct supervisor.
Complete mandatory and recurring training related to position necessary to maintain proficiency and improve capability for each person assigned to the assigned shift. Responsible for training guard staff on current UL 2050 responsibilities, DCSA standards, initial and annual training requirements and updates guards’ training records accordingly.
Compiles and reports operational metrics from assigned shift for review and analysis.
Recommends updates to the guard manual, security operating procedures and training standards as appropriate.
Effectively work with Visitor Control, PERSEC, Special Programs, and other RSS departments.
Communicate security policy changes, operational adjustments and administrative needs to, and on behalf of the guard force.
Ensures guard uniforms and supplies are in good condition, well stocked and guard appearance and demeanor is consistent with established policy.
Supports/assists with administrative functions/processes.
Fills in open shifts for emergency guard staffing shortages as necessary.
Performs additional duties as necessary and assigned by Guard Force Manager and Physical Security Manager within the scope of this position.
Required Qualifications
HS/GED.
At least three years of experience working as a guard or related role.
Demonstrate effective communication and grammar skills.
Ability to communicate information verbally in a report format.
Ability to pay attention to detail and produce accurate and timely work.
Must be flexible to work varied shift assignments.
Ability to use common office equipment.
Applicant must be able to walk up and down stairs to make security checks.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Applicant must have a dynamic skill set, willing to work with new technologies, be highly organized and capable of planning and coordinating multiple tasks and managing their time. The position will require attention to detail, effective problem solving skills and excellent judgment.
Ability to work independently with sensitive and confidential information, maintain a professional demeanor, work as a team member without daily supervision and effectively communicate with all groups of clients. Able to work under pressure and accept supervision. Regular and
punctual attendance.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience as a shift supervisor, or security operations center supervisor, or equivalent supervisory or leadership experience.
Eligibility for immediate access to classified information.
More than five years of experience as a guard or security officer (military, government or commercial).
Formal training in law enforcement, DoD or Industrial Security.
Some college level course work, computer proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat, etc. ASIS/Physical Security Professional (PSP) or CDSE Industrial Security Professional (ISP) certification desired.
Ability to swim is necessary and must be comfortable operating around an aquatic environment. Basic First Aid, life support and CPR training/certification preferred.
