Job Summary:
PayPal’s Financial Services Center of Excellence supports leading products generating more than $150B in annualized TPV and is central to the company’s strategy to grow transaction margins. The Debit & Money Management team owns the full customer journey—from offer presentment through account booking and servicing—across consumer and business products in North America and Europe.
We seek a strategic engineering leader with a proven record of delivering highly available financial products at scale. The ideal candidate brings strong frontend and systems expertise, sound architectural judgment, and experience navigating complex regulatory and partner environments. Success will include accelerating engineering velocity, expanding PayPal’s geographic and product footprint, and increasing market share. Reporting to the Head of Financial Services Engineering, this Director will join the FSCoE leadership team.
Job Description:
Essential Responsibilities:
Directs and controls the delivery of business and technical outcomes that comprise multiple projects and operational activities within a domain through organizational and technical leadership
Defines engineering health objectives that drive organization health, engineering best practices and operational targets
Drives product and technical strategy with cross-functional leaders across the enterprise to deliver Domain goals
Responsible for the delivery of programs, establishing annual organizational goals and ensuring performance and results that impact both their domain and potentially enterprise
Develops engineering strategy that translates into operational and tactical plans; uses ground-breaking methods to think beyond existing solutions
Sets the tri-annual roadmap for a domain level organization. Defines the operational strategy for a domain based on a defined budget
Evaluates key business challenges and can complete complex, ambiguous initiatives having impact across engineering; directs the development of new or innovative solutions. Ability to deal with high levels of technical domain level ambiguity.
Collaborates with direct team, managers in org, stakeholders, managers in other orgs, external partners and business stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications:
10+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
2 years of experience leading others

Balance technical debt, compliance requirements, and product velocity in a regulated environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
12+ years of experience in technology roles, including at least 8 years in a leadership position.
Proven experience leading large, distributed engineering organizations across multiple geographies.
Experience launching and operating debit cards, savings accounts, or other consumer financial services, such as credit, lending, or payments, in global markets.
Demonstrated success launching products for merchants and consumers across mobile and web platforms.
Experience building and sustaining high-performing engineering cultures grounded in customer obsession, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Strong understanding of the regulatory environment affecting debit and deposit products.

The base pay for this role will depend on where you work and the relevant experience and expertise you bring. The expected range of pay for this role by location is:

San Jose, California: ($218,000.00 - $323,950.00 Annually)

Additional Location(s) | Pay Range:
Chicago, Illinois: ($198,000.00 - $294,250.00 Annually)
Austin, Texas: ($198,000.00 - $294,250.00 Annually)
Scottsdale, Arizona: ($188,000.00 - $279,400.00 Annually)

Additional compensation for this role may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentive compensation, as applicable.
