The University of Miami/UHealth Office of the Neuroscience Institute has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Manager, Finance to work at the UHealth campus in Miami, Fl.
CORE JOB SUMMARY
The Sr. Manager, Finance leads and supports the organization’s financial activities such as forecasting, budgeting, strategic planning, and treasury with the goal of enhancing profitability and cash flow management. Further, the Sr. Manager, Finance oversees department staff to ensure that activities are always compliant with applicable rules and regulations.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
Establishes or recommends to management objectives and policies for the University.
Directs preparation of budgets, reviews budget proposals, and prepares necessary supporting documentation and justification.
Prepares various management reports on financial performance and explains and communicates key variance drivers and insights to appropriate managing staff.
Provides key financial support and analysis on an ad-hoc basis to help drive and improve business performance.
Compiles and analyzes data and prepares balance sheets and profit and loss statements.
Formulates reports to summarize and forecast organization’s business activity and financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past, present, and expected operations.
Identifies potential financial risks and areas of opportunity.
Prepares and coordinates for audits of department’s accounts.
Cultivates and maintains relationships with banks and other external financial institutions to facilitate job functions.
Establishes and continuously assesses the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures. Ensures employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field required
Experience:
Minimum 7 years of relevant experience required

Department Specific Functions
The Sr. Manager, Finance serves as the senior financial leader for the University of Miami Neuroscience Institute and reports directly to the Neuroscience Institute Director. In a structure without a separate administrative leader, the role provides institute-wide financial stewardship, planning, analysis, and coordination across basic, translational, and clinical neuroscience activities. The incumbent translates the Institute’s scientific and strategic priorities into sustainable financial plans; oversees operating, research, philanthropic, recruitment, and capital-related financial activity; strengthens internal controls and reporting; and serves as the primary finance liaison to university and Miller School of Medicine leaders for finance-related initiatives, processes, requests, and decisions.
Key responsibilities include:
Institute-Wide Financial Strategy and Leadership
Partners directly with the Neuroscience Institute Director to develop and execute short- and long-range financial strategies that advance the Institute’s scientific, academic, and programmatic priorities.
Serves as the Institute’s principal point of coordination for finance-related matters, providing timely financial guidance, decision support, and recommendations to faculty and institute leadership.
Leads the annual budget process and multiyear financial planning for the Institute, including operating plans, scenario analyses, resource requirements, and funding strategies.
Engages university, medical school, department, and central finance leaders on institutional initiatives, planning cycles, approvals, financial processes, data requests, and issue resolution.
Develops clear financial governance, service expectations, and workflows for an institute operating without a separate administrative leader.
Budgeting, Forecasting, and Financial Performance
Oversees institute-wide budgets, forecasts, commitments, and financial performance across assigned operating units, programs, shared resources, and strategic initiatives.
Prepares recurring management reports and executive-level dashboards that summarize financial position, key variance drivers, risks, opportunities, and recommended corrective actions.
Monitors revenues, expenses, commitments, fund balances, and financial trends; investigates variances and coordinates timely resolution with responsible stakeholders.
Develops financial models and business plans for new programs, faculty recruitment and retention packages, laboratory start-up commitments, philanthropic initiatives, shared resources, and capital requests.
Establishes and maintains cost allocation methodologies, recharge or service-center financial models, and resource-distribution approaches that are transparent, supportable, and aligned with institutional requirements.
Provides ad hoc financial analysis to evaluate investment options, operational tradeoffs, and the financial implications of strategic decisions.
Research Finance and Grant Portfolio Oversight
Provides financial oversight for the Institute’s sponsored and non-sponsored research portfolio in collaboration with principal investigators, departments, and central research administration offices.
Coordinates financial planning for complex programmatic grants, multi-investigator initiatives, training grants, centers, cores, and interdisciplinary research programs.
Monitors award budgets, expenditures, cost share, effort commitments, subawards, carryforward, projections, and closeout activity; identifies emerging funding or compliance risks and facilitates resolution.
Supports pre-award budget development and post-award financial management by aligning staffing, effort, operating costs, and institutional commitments with approved funding plans.
Develops portfolio-level projections and reporting that provide leadership with forward-looking visibility into research funding capacity, gaps, and sustainability.
Financial Controls, Compliance, and Audit Readiness
Establishes, documents, and continually assesses internal financial controls, approval pathways, and reconciliation processes across the Institute.
Ensures financial activities comply with university policies, sponsor requirements, applicable regulations, and approved terms and conditions.
Coordinates account reconciliations, financial corrections, audit requests, management responses, and remediation plans in partnership with appropriate institutional offices.
Develops standard operating procedures, tools, and training to promote consistent financial practices and accountability among relevant faculty and staff.
Identifies control gaps, financial exposure, and process breakdowns; recommends and implements practical corrective actions.
Financial Systems, Analytics, and Process Improvement
Leads development of standardized reporting, dashboards, forecasting tools, and data models to improve the accuracy, t
