Position SummaryThe HVAC Controls Technician II supports the proper operation of building automation and HVAC control systems by assisting with basic troubleshooting, calibration, and adjustment of sensors, controllers, and control sequences. Works under guidance, responds to control‑related service requests, documents system performance, and helps identify issues affecting HVAC efficiency or occupant comfort. Develops foundational skills in interpreting system data, reads technical documents, and communicates effectively with customers and team members to ensure issues are resolved with minimal disruption. Attention to detail, willingness to learn complex control logic, and commitment to safe, high‑quality work are essential for success in this position.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Troubleshoots, adjusts and calibrates HVAC building automation system sensors and controllers for various systems including, but not limited to, controls for air handling units, heat exchangers, variable air volume boxes, pumps, fans, etc.
Responds to work order requests for HVAC control problems and provides control system expertise to resolve HVAC problems.
Evaluates existing sequences of control for effectiveness, modifies sequences of control as required, isolates and corrects software and hardware control system problems, up to and including repairs, replaces, installs and connects building automation controllers, related components, control system wiring and related tasks.
Calibrates and tests HVAC systems and controls, documenting findings.
Downloads, updates and verifies software accuracy.
Works with customers and consultants to explain and rectify problems and to update equipment.
Programs Building Automation System (BAS) sequences of control for HVAC equipment including, but not limited to, controls for air handling units, heat exchangers, variable air volume boxes, pumps, fans, etc.
Reads and interprets plans, blueprints and other documentation.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Must be able to work in morgues, gross anatomy and pathology laboratories.

Required Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
Certifications/Professional Licenses:
No specific certification/professional license is required for this position.
Work Experience:
Facilities Hvac, Including Technical Support Of Johnson Controls Metasys Or Equivalent Bas System (3 Years)
Skills:
BACnet, Calibration Systems, Front End Programming
Driver's License:
A Class E (MO) or Class D (IL) license and a good driving record are required for this position.

Required Qualifications:
Trade School Diploma - in HVAC, Building Automation, or related field.
Three years of relevant experience Facilities HVAC, including technical support of Johnson Controls Metasys or equivalent BAS System.
Preferred Qualifications:
Five years of experience in Facilities HVAC, including Technical Support of Johnson Controls, Schneider Electric, Phoenix Controls or equivalent BAS System, preferably in a large industrial/commercial, or hospital setting.

Salary Range$29.96 - $47.92 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University.
