Pharmacist

General Summary
The Pharmacist is responsible for providing safe, accurate, and professional pharmacy services in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and professional standards. The Pharmacist reviews and verifies prescriptions and medication orders, ensures the appropriate preparation and dispensing of medications, provides medication counseling, and supports positive patient outcomes.
The Pharmacist works collaboratively with pharmacy technicians, physicians, healthcare professionals, patients, caregivers, and internal departments to ensure quality patient care, medication safety, and efficient pharmacy operations. The Pharmacist is also responsible for maintaining accurate and confidential patient and pharmacy records and following all established company policies and procedures.
Primary / Key Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Pharmacy Operations
Review, interpret, and verify prescriptions and medication orders for accuracy and appropriateness.
Safely and accurately dispense prescription medications in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and pharmacy standards.
Oversee and verify medication preparation and dispensing activities performed by pharmacy technicians and other support personnel within the scope of applicable law.
Maintain appropriate medication inventory levels and assist with medication procurement, storage, security, and disposal.
Ensure medications are stored and handled in accordance with manufacturer requirements and applicable regulations.
Follow established pharmacy workflow processes while prioritizing patient safety, accuracy, and efficiency.
Properly use and maintain pharmacy equipment, technology, software, and dispensing systems.
Identify operational issues and communicate concerns to management.
Participate in process improvement initiatives designed to enhance pharmacy efficiency, accuracy, and patient service.
Clinical & Patient Care
Review prescriptions for therapeutic appropriateness, drug interactions, allergies, contraindications, duplicate therapy, dosing concerns, and other potential medication-related issues.
Provide medication counseling and education to patients and caregivers regarding proper medication use, dosage, administration, potential side effects, precautions, and storage.
Respond to patient and healthcare provider inquiries regarding medications, prescriptions, and therapy-related concerns.
Communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals regarding medication therapy, clarification of orders, and potential clinical concerns.
Support medication adherence and promote positive patient outcomes.
Identify, document, and appropriately address medication-related problems.
Provide immunizations and other authorized pharmacy services in accordance with applicable law, company policy, and current credentials.
Maintain current knowledge of medications, treatment guidelines, pharmacy practices, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Compliance & Regulatory Responsibilities
Comply with all applicable federal, state, and local pharmacy laws, regulations, and professional standards.
Maintain an active and unrestricted pharmacist license in each applicable state of practice.
Maintain required certifications, registrations, and continuing education.
Follow company policies and procedures related to prescription processing, medication safety, controlled substances, patient privacy, and pharmacy operations.
Ensure controlled substances and other regulated medications are handled, documented, and dispensed in accordance with applicable laws and company procedures.
Maintain accurate and complete pharmacy and patient records.
Protect patient health information and maintain compliance with HIPAA and other applicable privacy requirements.
Report medication errors, discrepancies, adverse drug events, patient complaints, and other compliance or safety concerns to the appropriate management personnel.
Cooperate with internal audits, quality reviews, regulatory inspections, and other compliance activities as required.
Quality Assurance & Medication Safety
Participate in quality assurance and medication safety programs.
Identify and report medication errors, near misses, dispensing discrepancies, and other potential patient safety concerns.
Assist in investigating medication-related incidents and implementing appropriate corrective actions.
Monitor pharmacy practices to ensure adherence to established safety and quality standards.
Promote continuous improvement in pharmacy services, workflow, and patient care.
Maintain accurate, organized, and confidential documentation related to pharmacy activities.
Team Collaboration & Support
Work effectively with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy leadership, physicians, healthcare providers, and other internal departments.
Provide guidance and professional support to pharmacy technicians and other pharmacy personnel as appropriate.
Assist with training and onboarding of pharmacy staff regarding pharmacy procedures, medication safety, workflow, and applicable requirements.
Maintain a professional, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
Communicate effectively with management regarding operational, clinical, compliance, and staffing concerns.
Support company initiatives and other pharmacy-related projects as assigned.
Education and/or Experience and Qualifications
Minimum Education: Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy, or equivalent pharmacist degree from an accredited pharmacy program.
Minimum Experience: 2–4 years of experience as a pharmacist in a retail, specialty, mail-order, physician dispensing, healthcare, or related pharmacy environment preferred.
Current, unrestricted pharmacist license in the state of practice.
Current immunization certification, as applicable to the position.
Current DEA registration, if required based on job responsibilities and state requirements.
CPR/BLS certification, if required by the position or applicable state requirements.
Strong knowledge of pharmacy laws, medication safety, clinical practices, and professional standards.
Working knowledge of Workers' Compensation claims and insurance processes preferred.
Experience with pharmacy management systems, electronic prescribing platforms, and healthcare technology preferred.
Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent attention to detail and commitment to patient safety.
Ability to exercise sound professional judgment and maintain confidentiality.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong knowledge of prescription medications, medication therapy, drug interactions, contraindications, and safe dispensing practices.

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the workday.
Ability to perform routine pharmacy duties, including handling medication inventory, supplies, and pharmacy equipment.
