Deputy Fire Chief
The Deputy Fire Chief is part of the leadership command and assists the Fire Chief with the day-to day administrative and management operations, supervising of fire and EMS personnel, emergency management planning and fire prevention officer duties.
The Deputy Chief will be directly responsible for the department’s training program implementing Mass Fire Academy training, practical exercises and drills; maintaining accurate record keeping of all fire related incidents, training, maintenance and equipment. Position shall serve as the Department Head in the temporary absence of the Fire Chief.
The Deputy Chief serves as the direct supervisor of the EMS Coordinator, EMS Training Coordinator and Fire Officers.
Candidates must have extensive knowledge on the principles, practices and techniques of fire suppression, fire prevention and hazardous materials; ability to supervise, train, evaluate, and lead the work of others while maintaining a high level of discipline and morals. Must be able to communicate and work effectively with subordinates, other Town departments, elected officials and members of the public; ability to react quickly and remain calm when directing firefighters in emergency situations. Position is required to respond to emergencies and be available 24/7, 365 days of the year. Residency on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard required.
Minimum Qualifications Include But Not Limited To:
Seven to ten years of progressive experience as a member of a Fire Department.
Minimum of three years’ experience at a supervisory or command rank.
Fire Instructor 1 and Fire Officer 1 certifications required
Advanced Fire Officer training to include at a minimum training to the level of Fire Officer 2, required within two (2) years of appointment.
Fire Prevention Officer Required
A working knowledge of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code, 527 CMR 1.00
Knowledge and understanding of the Massachusetts Pre-hospital EMS Protocols.
NIMS/ICS Command level certifications. ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 required. ICS 300 and 400 preferred.
An Associates or Bachelor’s degree in fire science preferred but not required.
Massachusetts Paramedic or Emergency Medical Technician (required)
Experience working with a Call/Volunteer system strongly preferred.
Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
Salary Range $109,620 to $125,280
