Detention Center Captain

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs administrative duties using the computer and telephone; handles correspondence and memorandums; orders necessary supplies each week; and completes weekly work schedules.
Supervises assigned staff; completes/reviews staff evaluations; attends Command Staff meetings; and medical and mental health transports.
Ensures inspections and spot checks of safety and security functions; makes sure personnel follow protocols.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION:

Requires an associate’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A minimum of seven (7) years of experience within a correctional environment is required, including at least three to five (3-5) years in a leadership or managerial capacity as a lieutenant or higher, overseeing a detainee population of two hundred (500) or more. Experience working in a detention facility is required.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Must possess and maintain Jail Officer and Jail Management certification from the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy.
Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
Must meet other requirements as set forth in applicable South Carolina statutes and regulations.
Must possess or be able to obtain a national certification from ACA, AJA, NSA, or NIJO within one (1) year of hire.
NCIC certification desired.
Must possess Class II officer certification or be able to obtain certification from the SC Criminal Justice Academy within six (6) months of hire.
Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED
Data Involvement: Requires gathering, organizing, analyzing, examining or evaluating data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information.
People Involvement: Requires strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with detainees, staff, and the public.
Involvement with Things: Requires leading, operating or repairing complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as police vehicles and equipment, firearms. Involves operations of limited scope.
Reasoning Requirements: Requires performing skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem-solving.
Mathematical Requirements: Requires using addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages.
Language Requirements: Requires reading technical instructions, procedures, manuals and charts to solve practical problems; composing routine reports and specialized reports, forms and business letters with proper format; speaking compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.
Mental Requirements: Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.
Judgments and Decisions: Responsible for guiding others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.
