Job Description
Job Type: Full Time | Location: Vancouver, BC | Department: Engineering | Reporting to: VP of Engineering | Work Location Type: #hybrid
IREN is a vertically integrated AI Cloud provider, delivering large-scale data centers and GPU clusters for AI training and inference. IREN's platform is underpinned by its expansive portfolio of grid-connected land and power in renewable-rich regions across North America, Europe and APAC.
We are moving to liquid-cooled GPU halls at high density. Reporting to the VP, Engineering, the Senior Mechanical Engineer owns the mechanical systems that move heat and fluid across our Canadian sites: chilled water plant, coolant distribution, pumps, piping, heat exchangers, chillers and the controls around them, from design through construction, commissioning and operation.
You do not need to have worked in a data center. We are looking for an engineer who has owned fluid systems end to end in a demanding environment (oil and gas, petrochemical, water treatment, marine, mining or industrial process are all good backgrounds) and who can bring that to a new problem. If your career has been in pumps, pipes, chillers and compressors rather than fans and ducts, this is the role for you.
With 100% renewable energy, we build, own and operate our data centers and take pride in being at the forefront of sustainable solutions for the ever-evolving applications of high-performance compute. We believe that human progress is invaluable, but it should be done in the right way: responsibly, sustainably and having a positive impact on the communities we operate in.
Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution. P.Eng or eligibility for registration with EGBC preferred.
7+ years designing, building, commissioning or operating fluid-moving mechanical systems: pumps, piping, chillers, compressors, heat exchangers, hydronic and process cooling plants.
Data center or mission critical experience preferred. Liquid cooling exposure (direct-to-chip, coolant distribution units, rear-door heat exchangers) is a strong asset.
Hands-on experience sizing pumps, piping, heat exchangers and chilled water plant, including hydraulic and thermal calculations.
Working knowledge of P&IDs and plant design tools (AutoCAD, Revit or equivalent).
Ability to apply CFD and thermal analysis results to design decisions.
Working knowledge of ASHRAE (including TC 9.9), ASME B31 piping codes, CSA and BC codes. ASPE, IPC and IECC an asset. Familiarity with BMS/BAS or DCIM platforms an asset.
Senior individual contributor who mentors and coordinates across disciplines, with the potential to lead a mechanical team as the group grows.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills across audiences from junior staff to senior leadership.
Self-driven, detail oriented, and comfortable delivering high-quality work with limited direction, uncertainty and limited information.
Willing to travel regularly to Prince George and other IREN sites in BC, and Alberta in future.
Job Responsibilities
Serve as the owner's mechanical SME for cooling plant across design, construction, commissioning and operations of liquid-cooled HPC data centers: chilled water, coolant distribution, pumps, piping, heat exchangers and controls.
Review and validate specifications, calculations, drawings and other technical deliverables from consultants, equipment manufacturers, engineering firms and commissioning agents.
Lead or support construction, installation and commissioning activities for mechanical systems.
Monitor mechanical system performance to maintain operating limits and reliability, assess current and future capacity constraints, and implement energy-efficient improvements.
Collaborate with architects, electrical engineers and other stakeholders to ensure integrated design solutions.
Support project planning by contributing to schedules, budgets and resourcing plans, and coordinating with site teams, corporate staff and external engineering partners.
Develop technical documentation (plans, checklists, specifications, reports, procedures and standards) to support work from design through construction, commissioning and operations.
Maintain records for cooling-system technical documentation and site integration, ensuring completeness, accuracy and availability.
Coach and provide feedback to other staff on cooling, mechanical and piping matters.
Perform technical analyses (calculations, simulations, CFD and thermal analysis) to optimize liquid and air cooling and airflow.
