As a Transmission System Planning Consultant, you’ll join our Grid Engineering and Interconnection team and support power delivery utilities in making assessments backed by industry and engineering analysis. You’ll perform transmission planning studies covering transient stability, power flow, transfer capability, reliability, short-circuit, economic dispatch, and electromagnetic analyses associated with congestion management scenarios. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys system planning work, brings strong judgment to complex technical problems, and wants to contribute to work that shapes real-world decisions in the energy industry.
You’ll engage with a range of industry participants, including independent transmission providers, municipal electric utilities, electric cooperatives, and investor-owned utilities. As a prime contributor to the execution of technical studies, you’ll work with project managers to direct technical execution, engage directly with clients to determine study goals and create project methodologies, and guide a team of consultants and engineers toward practical, viable deliverables.
In this role, you will:
- Perform transmission planning studies, including transient stability, power flow, transfer capability, reliability, short-circuit, economic dispatch, and electromagnetic analyses
- Engage directly with clients to determine study goals, create project methodologies, and define deliverables
- Direct portions of project execution, including analysis and engineering, staffing plan development, deliverables, quality management, and schedule
- Lead a team of consultants and engineers to meet study objectives and deliver practical, viable results
- Develop study reports that document assumptions, methodology, and findings
- Partner with project managers to direct the technical execution of projects
- Manage and support on-the-job training efforts for less practiced team members
- Support project managers in business development pursuits
- Manage multiple projects concurrently, identifying critical path items to ensure deliverable deadlines are met

- Independently evaluate, select, adapt, and modify standard engineering techniques for transmission system planning procedures and criteria
- Work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment
- Lead, educate, and train a team of engineers and analysts on renewable generation studies and design efforts
- Work independently to solve difficult problems that require adapting standard techniques, procedures, and criteria
- Bring strong organization, attention to detail, team building, collaboration, and critical thinking skills
- Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing
- Focus on priorities to provide services that meet client needs, while identifying and analyzing the details critical to project outcomes
- Perform well under pressure and narrow deadlines
- Are enthusiastic about learning new services to support client needs and the market
And even better if you:
- Have competency in TARA, Aspen, EasyPower, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, or PROMOD
- Hold a master’s degree in engineering with two years of related experience, or a Ph.D. in engineering with one year of related experience
- Have experience with generator interconnection and harmonics analysis
- Have experience with production costing and risk assessment techniques
Experience and Skills to Qualify Include:
- Bachelor of Science in an engineering field or a related degree from an accredited program
- Minimum of 3 years of related experience in electric utility operations, planning, or consulting
- Understanding of transmission system planning processes and electric transmission systems
- Familiarity with power system planning and operations; transient stability, short-circuit, and voltage analysis; North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and regional requirements, policies, and procedures; production costing; risk assessment techniques; transmission planning (TPL) compliance; generator interconnection; and harmonics analysis
- Strong competency in industry software including PSS/E
- Developed expertise to independently perform a transmission system planning study
- Experience developing study reports that document study assumptions and findings
- Knowledge of NERC and FERC standards
- Knowledge of the power regions of the country and independent system operators (ISOs) such as MISO, ERCOT, PJM, SPP, CAISO, WECC, SERC, NYISO, and ISO-NE
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Ability to travel up to 10%

The budgeted salary for this position is $140,000 – $180,000 USD + annual bonus. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience.
This role will be 100% remote, with travel up to 10%.
