The profile required is an IoT engineer who has worked at the application and device layer as a primary career focus — not an infrastructure or network engineer who has touched IoT peripherally.
Candidates from IoT companies where device-to-cloud engineering is the core

What the Role Actually Requires
Essential — non-negotiable:
IoT application layer depth — the candidate must understand how IoT devices communicate to application servers at the protocol level. MQTT is the primary protocol in the Client's environment. Candidates must be able to describe publisher/broker/subscriber architecture, name a broker (Mosquitto or EMQX), explain how to verify broker health using systemctl and log files, and diagnose device communication failures at the application layer rather than the network layer.
IoT device types — direct experience with occupancy sensors, air quality monitors, smart lighting, CCTV, or building management systems. The candidate must have worked with these devices at the configuration and application layer, not just managed the network infrastructure around them.
IoT endpoint management — firmware updates, certificate lifecycle management, device configuration, and lifecycle from onboarding through decommission across a fleet of devices.
OT/IT convergence — experience working where operational technology meets enterprise IT infrastructure. Industrial protocols (Modbus, OPC-UA, BACnet) are a significant advantage.
Building automation or smart building backgrounds are the strongest source of the right candidates.
Regulated environment awareness — structured change control, security architecture review processes, and multi-team approval workflows. Financial services, pharmaceutical GMP, government, or similarly regulated environments all qualify.
