Staff Software Engineer - Files Platform

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer - Files Platform based in United States.
This is a staff-level backend engineering role focused on building the distributed systems behind a secure, enterprise-scale file management platform.
You’ll tackle complex challenges involving event-driven architectures, access control, data synchronization, and third-party integrations.
Your work will support financial services organizations ranging from smaller advisory firms to some of the largest wealth managers globally.
You’ll design systems capable of handling bursty workloads, strict latency requirements, sensitive data, and complex authorization scenarios.
The role combines deep technical ownership with cross-functional collaboration across Product, Engineering, Security, and Compliance.
You’ll also have opportunities to shape AI-powered file processing, metadata extraction, and content-aware workflows as the platform evolves.

Accountabilities
Architect, implement, and maintain backend services supporting enterprise-scale file storage, permissions synchronization, and third-party file integrations, with a strong focus on reliability, security, and maintainable code.
Design and build event-driven systems that enable real-time permission propagation across financial data environments and external storage providers while meeting strict compliance and revocation requirements.
Develop distributed systems capable of handling bursty workloads, complex service-to-service state reconciliation, and demanding latency SLAs.
Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, Security, and Compliance teams on initiatives involving sensitive data access, authorization, and enterprise file management.
Lead complex technical projects across multiple teams, ensuring effective coordination, sound architectural decisions, and successful delivery.
Contribute to major platform migrations and infrastructure evolution, including third-party storage transitions, webhook consolidation, and changes to folder structures while maintaining reliable production operations.
Mentor engineers and promote strong engineering practices, technical standards, testing approaches, and architectural principles across the team.
Explore and develop AI-powered capabilities for intelligent file processing, automated metadata extraction, and content-aware workflows.
Evaluate emerging third-party file platform capabilities and identify opportunities to expand and improve file management functionality.
Contribute to the ongoing evolution of scalable, secure, and reliable infrastructure for enterprise customers.
Requirements
7+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering, with a track record of designing and delivering complex production systems.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a comparable technical field.
Strong experience with server-side programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++.
Experience working with relational databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server.
Strong understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, or related backend infrastructure patterns.
Experience designing systems that operate at scale and require reliability, low latency, state reconciliation, or complex access control.
Ability to lead complex projects involving multiple teams and stakeholders while maintaining strong technical ownership.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions and collaborate effectively across disciplines.
Strong problem-solving abilities and a systems-oriented approach to designing scalable solutions.
Experience working with sensitive data, authorization systems, compliance requirements, or enterprise security considerations is valuable.
Experience building scalable cloud infrastructure on AWS is a plus.
Experience working with file system vendors or enterprise file management platforms is a plus.
Legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without requiring current or future visa sponsorship and able to begin work in the U.S. on the first day of employment.
Benefits
Base salary: $158,000–$248,000 USD, with the specific offer determined by role requirements, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions.
