About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Sr. Staff AI Engineer to join our remote-eligible team. In this pivotal role, you will lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced AI systems that transform how we serve our customers and support our internal teams. You will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers to deliver AI-powered solutions that are scalable, reliable, and responsible. Your expertise will help shape the technical vision and long-term roadmap of our foundational AI systems, ensuring they incorporate the latest research breakthroughs and industry best practices. You will also drive initiatives related to AI safety, transparency, and governance, establishing standards that guide company-wide AI development. As a leader, you will mentor senior technical staff, influence organizational strategy, and contribute to the evolution of Capital One’s AI infrastructure, ensuring it remains at the forefront of innovation and ethical standards.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields plus at least 10 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies
Master’s Degree in the same fields plus at least 8 years of relevant experience
Minimum of 10 years programming experience with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java
Experience architecting AI platforms with considerations for cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy
Proven track record of deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or private clouds
Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring engineering teams and influencing stakeholders at senior levels
Demonstrated expertise in developing AI algorithms including LLM inference, similarity search, VectorDBs, guardrails, and memory systems
Knowledge of AI safety, governance, and ethical standards in AI deployment
Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex AI concepts to diverse audiences
Recognition as an industry leader through patents, publications, or open-source contributions
Experience in designing long-term AI infrastructure strategies balancing cost, scale, ethics, and compliance
Responsibilities
Partner with cross-functional teams to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer interactions and internal workflows
Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components including foundation models, language model inference, multi-agent workflows, and model governance tools
Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, PyTorch, and others
Innovate state-of-the-art foundation model optimization techniques to improve performance metrics such as scalability, latency, and cost-efficiency
Contribute to the technical vision and roadmap for Capital One’s AI systems, ensuring alignment with industry advancements
Define and implement AI architecture standards, integrating research breakthroughs into reliable production ecosystems
Establish and lead AI safety, transparency, and performance standards across the organization
Drive multi-year initiatives to unify data, compute, and model lifecycle management within an enterprise AI architecture
Mentor and develop senior technical leaders, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence in AI engineering
