Sr. Director, HR Business Partner - Tech

This is a highly strategic role responsible for influencing the future of our AI organizations Talent Strategy. You will be responsible for orchestrating a high-growth, transformative HR roadmap to scale AI/ML, build the organizational structure of the future, and ensure we are designing to drive business impact. You will lead the organizational design and talent strategy for the LOB Applied AI organization, develop a sustainable and highly aligned leadership team across AI, ML, AI/ML Product, and LOB Applied AI, and orchestrate complex cross-functional collaboration with recruiting, compensation, business leaders, and HR to drive our hiring strategy for scarce AI Engineering and research roles.
The Tech HR team is looking for a Sr. Director, Tech HR Business Partner to work with the Tech organization as a strategic talent lead, driving transformative people initiatives and the 2026 Tech Job Architecture roadmap. This role will lead talent strategy for our AI and Machine organization that will drive impact across a scaled AI, Machine Learning and Data Science organization. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong relationship building, influencing, and problem solving skills to deliver an HR strategy aligned with market-aligned, progressive technology oriented and long-term tech governance. This role has the opportunity to drive impact in a state of the art, progressive AI organization.
Responsible for:
Consult with the senior executives, other HRBPs and HR partner groups (people analytics, recruiting, compensation, associate relations, learning & development, etc.) to drive business success by providing thought leadership, and direction, accountable for delivering a HR strategy that is aligned with the needs of the organization.
Lead senior executives in translating the business strategy into a talent strategy that embeds and reinforces a culture where associates are seen, heard, valued and have an equitable opportunity to succeed.
Embedded within the LOB senior leadership team, HRBPs are accountable for delivering and leading all talent-related deliverables including:
Defining a talent strategy that supports business strategy/objectives
Strategic workforce planning, including succession planning
Recruiting/retention strategies, including talent competition marketplace assessments to effectively compete and motivate talent to achieve business objectives
Assessing Human Capital risks for the business and developing remediation strategies as appropriate
Leveraging key trends and/or gaps to incorporate within strategic decisions and talent plan
Assessing skills gaps and partnering with the business
Managing employment practice risk weighing short and long term impacts, including Associate Relation mitigation strategies, staffing/co-employment strategies, etc.
Influencing the prioritization of the work that will drive the highest value for your client groups.
Provide executive coaching and advice on key areas such as leadership, teamwork, org design, strategy, etc.
Create and support business outcomes with HR programs, initiatives and strategies leading to a market competitive advantage.
Develop innovative and creative solutions with a willingness to push and challenge for transformative work.
Lead and participate in enterprise-wide HR project work, partnering with peers across the organization to create and share systemic solutions to HR challenges.
Measure effectiveness of HR strategy and programs to ensure business effectiveness. Leverage data to craft insights that focus intentional action.
Be an inspiring leader to your HR team and partners, providing focus through vision and prioritization, and elevating your team through coaching and development.
Oversee the scaling of the Applied AI organization, managing growth for 800 current FTEs and 400 projected hires.
Drive specialized talent management processes for unique AI-centric job families (AIE, AR, DS, SWE).
Partner with leadership to operationalize the 2026 AI/ML framework, mapping talent to distinct LOB goals.
Lead the build-out of a novel organization, managing ambiguity and influencing outcomes that have not yet been defined at Capital One.
Proactively mitigate competitive risks by implementing hiring strategies that address high cost-to-hire and talent scarcity.
Basic Qualifications:
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certification
At least 9 years of client facing experience OR at least 9 years of consulting experience OR a combination
At least 9 years of experience in Human Resources
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree or Military Experience
MBA or Master’s Degree
Professional Human Resources Certification or Senior Professional Human Resources certification or coaching certification
11+ years of client facing experience or 11+ years of consulting experience or a combination
11+ years of experience in in Human Resources or Human Capital Consulting

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $238,700 - $272,400 for Sr Director, HR Business Partner
Richmond, VA: $217,000 - $247,700 for Sr Director, HR Business Partner
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will
