About the role
Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) sit at the intersection of engineering and customer impact. This is not a traditional product engineering role - it's built for engineers who want their work to directly shape outcomes for Synthesia's most strategic customers and partners, often within days, not sprints.
You'll be embedded in high-value customer engagements, working alongside Sales, Solutions, and Customer Success to design, build, and ship bespoke technical solutions that unlock use cases no off-the-shelf feature could address. You'll own the full arc - from a whiteboard conversation with a customer's CTO through to a working, deployed integration - and you'll do it fast.
This role is for engineers who are super scrappy, fast-learning, and ambitious - people who might not pass every bar of a traditional product engineering process but who consistently find creative ways to get things built and shipped in the real world.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Work directly with Synthesia's most strategic customers and partners to design and build bespoke technical solutions that unlock high-value use cases on their behalf.
- Own the full build cycle for custom engagements: from scoping and architecture through to delivery, with a bias toward speed and impact over broad reusability.
- Bridge technical and business stakeholders - equally fluent in conversations with engineers and architects as with senior decision-makers on the customer or partner side.
- Translate ambiguous customer requirements into working prototypes and production-grade solutions in tight timelines.
- Partner with internal product and engineering teams to feed real-world customer needs back into the product roadmap.
- Identify patterns across customer engagements and help define where bespoke builds should become platform features.
- Represent Synthesia's technical capabilities confidently and credibly in customer meetings, workshops, and discovery sessions.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
THE MINDSET MATTERS MORE THAN THE CV
You don't need to have worked at a particular company or passed a particular interview loop. What we care about is how you operate:
- Bias for action. You build before asking permission. You ship something scrappy to test a hypothesis before writing a spec.
- Rapid learner. You pick up new tools, APIs, and customer contexts quickly - and you enjoy the discomfort of operating at the edge of what you know.
- Customer instinct. You naturally ask "what problem are they actually trying to solve?" before writing a line of code.
- Commercially aware. You understand that speed of delivery is a form of value. You make tradeoffs that a product engineer might not - and you own the consequences.
- Communicator. You can run a technical deep-dive with an enterprise architect in the morning and explain your approach to a CPO in the afternoon.
EXPERIENCE SIGNALS WE LOOK FOR
- Experience building and shipping working software - the form it took matters less than the fact you've owned something end-to-end.
- Comfort working across the stack or with APIs and integrations to deliver solutions quickly.
- Some exposure to customer or commercial contexts - whether that's a startup, an agency, a consulting role, or a side project with real users.
- Familiarity with how enterprise customers think about technical integrations and vendor solutions.
- Experience using AI tools to accelerate your output (we expect this to be part of how you work, not a bonus).
WHAT WE'RE EXPLICITLY NOT OPTIMISING FOR
- Mastery of a specific language, framework, or infrastructure stack.
- Performance on algorithmic coding challenges or system design interviews at the level we'd apply for product engineering roles.
- Deep specialisation in ML, platform engineering, or any single technical domain.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE (FIRST 12 MONTHS)
- You've led three or more end-to-end custom engagements for strategic customers, from scoping call to working deployment.
- You've built a reputation internally as the person who can get things done with and for customers - fast.
- You've fed meaningful insights from the field back to product teams, influencing at least one roadmap decision.
- You've become comfortable operating across the full Synthesia platform and API surface, and know where the edges are.
- You've helped define the playbook for how FDE engagements are scoped, run, and handed off.

- Our preference is for this role to based either in-office or remote in the following locations: UK, Germany, Switzerland or Ireland.
We may also be able to support remote workers in other locations across Europe subject to compliance and right to work checks.
- The salary starts at EUR/GBP/CHF 130.000 base + RSU's.
- This is full-time employment only - no contractors possible - usually through OysterHR.
- Everyone at Synthesia gets 25 days of leave + local holidays.
