The U.S. Consumer Services and Membership Digital Experiences Technology team (USCDT) brings together foundational strategic technology capabilities in digital experience engineering (Mobile and Web), marketing and advertising technology, enterprise communications, travel and lifestyle, and dining technology. It employs a ground-breaking focus with development responsibilities for customer-facing capabilities that deepen and expand digital engagement, as well as core technical capabilities that cut across business lines and customer segments.
We’re looking for an experienced Sr. Engineer l to work on the mobile payments solutions that will be used by tens of millions of cardholders around the world. We want someone who is super creative and enjoys solving tough problems. You should be able to come up with brilliant solutions that no one else can, and be obsessive about UI/UX design and user experience.​
​You’ll be part of the Digital Payments Engineering team whose mandate is to develop new products and platforms for American Express customers. Payments Engineering’s aim is to build interactive experiences at all touch points of a consumer's journey whether before, at, or after the time of purchase. The products will range from new payment vehicles and partnerships with other payment entities to interactive web experiences.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience with one or more of the following:
Vert.x or other reactive frameworks (Spring WebFlux, Quarkus, Micronaut, Reactor)
Couchbase or other NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra, DynamoDB)
OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and enterprise authentication/authorization frameworks
Event-driven architectures using Kafka or similar messaging platforms
Docker and Kubernetes AWS, Open-Shift, or Google Cloud
CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar tools
Observability tools such as Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry
Work Experience
5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend application development.
Extensive experience designing, developing, testing, and deploying enterprise applications using Java 8+ and Kotlin.
Hands-on experience implementing asynchronous and concurrent applications using Completable Future, Java Streams, Executor Framework, and Java concurrency utilities.
Experience designing and building scalable RESTful APIs and microservices.
Experience implementing application security using JWE, encryption libraries, secure key management practices, and industry-standard cryptographic protocols.
Experience securing APIs using authentication and authorization standards such as OAuth 2.0, JWT, and TLS/SSL.
Experience developing applications in distributed, multi-tier architectures.
Experience with relational and NoSQL databases.
Experience with Agile software development methodologies, including Scrum or Kanban.
Experience writing automated unit, integration, and performance tests.
Experience performing code reviews, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering best practices.
Experience troubleshooting production issues, improving application performance, and enhancing system reliability.
Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across engineering, architecture, and product teams.

Experience with reactive programming using Vert.x or similar frameworks.
Experience with event-driven and message-based architectures.
Experience designing secure, high-throughput APIs for enterprise platforms.
Experience leading technical design discussions and driving architectural decisions.
Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to engineering standards and best practices.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
Depending on factors such as business unit requirements, the nature of the position, cost and applicable laws, American Express may provide visa sponsorship for certain positions.
Strong proficiency in Java 8+ with extensive experience developing enterprise-grade applications.
Hands-on experience with Kotlin for backend application development.
Strong knowledge of modern Java features, including Streams API, Completable Future, lambda expressions, functional programming concepts, and the Java Concurrency framework
Strong understanding of object-oriented design principles, SOLID principles, and common design patterns.
Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices.
Experience implementing secure application development practices, including JSON Web Encryption (JWE) and industry-standard encryption mechanisms for protecting sensitive data in transit and at rest.
Working knowledge of cryptographic concepts and standards, including JWE, JWT, JWS, TLS/SSL, AES, RSA, digital signatures, key management, and certificate-based authentication.
Experience building scalable, resilient, and high-performance distributed systems.
Strong understanding of multithreading, asynchronous programming, concurrency, synchronization, and performance optimization.
Experience with Maven or Gradle build tools.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
