Principal Consultant - Energy Advisory

Responsibilities
Lead energy advisory assignments covering electricity markets, policy and regulation, power systems, renewable energy, energy storage, demand flexibility, network planning, decarbonisation and energy transition strategy.
Take ownership of defined areas of study, including scoping the approach, structuring the analysis, managing inputs, reviewing outputs and ensuring that findings are robust, commercially relevant and aligned with client objectives.
Conduct and oversee policy, regulatory, market, technical and commercial research across generation, transmission, distribution, distributed energy resources, flexibility, demand-side response and large energy user themes.
Analyse existing and emerging policies, regulations, market rules, tariff structures, grid codes, procurement frameworks and investment mechanisms to assess their strategic and commercial implications for clients.
Lead strategic studies, market assessments, feasibility assessments, commercial analysis, regulatory impact assessments, implementation roadmaps, business cases and option appraisals.
Contribute to the design, review and implementation of energy policy frameworks, regulatory models, market-enabling mechanisms, commercial models and governance structures.
Undertake international benchmarking of energy policies, regulatory frameworks and market design approaches, and translate findings into practical recommendations for local market application.
Lead or support assignments related to flexibility markets, ancillary services, capacity mechanisms, network charging, grid connection reform, energy procurement, auctions, revenue models and investment frameworks.
Prepare and review high-quality client deliverables including reports, slide decks, technical notes, briefing papers, consultation responses, executive summaries and decision-support materials.
Lead collaboration with technical specialists, economists, modellers, commercial advisors and project managers to deliver integrated, evidence-based advisory solutions.
Support work winning through proposal writing, scope development, methodology design, fee build-up inputs, credentials, client presentations, thought leadership and identification of emerging opportunities.
Contribute to quality assurance by reviewing analysis, assumptions, sources, calculations, commercial logic and outputs for accuracy, consistency and client relevance.
Provide day-to-day guidance, coaching and technical direction to junior consultants and analysts, including reviewing their work, improving analytical quality and supporting their professional development.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, energy systems, energy policy, economics, public policy, law, environmental policy, sustainability or a related discipline.
Typically 10–15 years of relevant experience in energy advisory, power sector consulting, electricity markets, utilities, renewable energy, flexibility, policy and regulation, network advisory or energy transition strategy.
Experience leading workstreams or defined areas of study for utilities, system operators, regulators, government bodies, developers, investors, large energy users or infrastructure clients.
Experience guiding junior team members, reviewing technical and commercial analysis, and contributing to capability development within project teams.
Experience in preparing and reviewing client-facing deliverables such as market studies, regulatory assessments, technical advisory reports, commercial assessments, policy frameworks, business cases, implementation roadmaps, investment assessments and consultation responses.
Experience supporting work winning, including proposal writing, methodology development, scope definition, commercial inputs, credentials and client presentations.
Professional exposure to UK, Ireland, India, Middle East, APAC or other international electricity markets would be beneficial.
Prior consulting experience, including client engagement, project delivery, quality assurance and multi-disciplinary coordination, would be advantageous.
