Senior QA Automation Engineer – Mobile
Position Overview
TEGNA is looking for a Senior QA Automation Engineer – Mobile with 5–7 years of experience to join our dynamic engineering team. The role will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining scalable automation frameworks while ensuring high quality and reliability across mobile applications.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Appium Server, Android and iOS automation, Playwright, Cucumber/BDD, JavaScript/TypeScript, API testing, and CI/CD. The candidate will work closely with Product, Development, DevOps, and other cross-functional teams to drive mobile automation strategy, improve test coverage, and deliver high-quality mobile experiences.
What You’ll Do
Design, develop, and maintain scalable and reliable mobile automation frameworks.
Develop automated test scripts using Appium Server, Playwright, Cucumber (BDD), JavaScript, and/or TypeScript.
Build and maintain automation solutions for Android and iOS mobile applications.
Execute comprehensive functional, regression, smoke, integration, end-to-end, and API testing.
Develop and maintain automated test suites for mobile applications across different devices, operating systems, and application versions.
Work with real devices and device-cloud platforms to execute and validate mobile application tests.
Collaborate closely with Product, Development, DevOps, and other cross-functional teams throughout the software development lifecycle.
Analyze automation failures, perform root-cause analysis, report defects, and validate fixes.
Integrate and support automated testing within CI/CD pipelines.
Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, sprint planning, estimation, release planning, and quality discussions.
Lead automation strategy and continuously enhance frameworks, test coverage, and automation efficiency.
Develop reusable automation components and establish scalable automation practices.
Perform code reviews and ensure adherence to automation coding standards and best practices.
Mentor QA engineers and provide technical guidance on mobile automation and testing practices.
Identify opportunities to improve test effectiveness, execution efficiency, and overall product quality.
React to changes positively, handle other essential tasks as assigned, and productively challenge the status quo as appropriate.
What You Bring
5–7 years of demonstrated experience in QA Automation / Software Testing, with strong mobile automation experience.
Strong hands-on experience with Appium Server.
Hands-on experience automating both Android and iOS applications.
Strong programming experience in JavaScript and/or TypeScript.
Hands-on experience with Playwright.
Experience with Cucumber and BDD-based automation frameworks.
Strong experience with functional, regression, smoke, integration, end-to-end, and API testing.
Experience working with real mobile devices and device-cloud platforms.
Strong understanding of mobile automation framework architecture, reusable components, Page Object Model, assertions, test data, and test execution strategies.
Experience with Git and source-control practices.
Experience supporting CI/CD pipelines and integrating automated tests into continuous testing workflows.
Strong debugging, defect investigation, and root-cause analysis skills.
Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment.
Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with Product, Engineering, DevOps, and other teams.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
