About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
Referment is working with a consumer fintech platform that connects people seeking short-term loans with community members who fund them. The business is looking for a Director of Compliance to manage its compliance programme across lending, payments and related financial products.
Reporting to the General Counsel, you'll combine programme leadership with hands-on implementation. You'll work closely with Legal, Product, Engineering, Data and Operations, as well as bank partners, to identify risks and translate regulatory requirements into practical controls.
The remit covers both day-to-day compliance and the governance that supports it: policies, risk assessments, partner diligence, audit responses and reporting to senior stakeholders. This suits someone who can explain what a regulation means for a product decision and then help put the necessary process in place.
The Role
Design, implement and manage the company-wide compliance programme, including periodic reviews and annual risk assessments.
Maintain AML policies and programme requirements, coordinating reviews and employee training.
Update policies, internal controls and consumer disclosures as products and regulations change, including loan agreements and Regulation Z/TILA disclosures.
Lead third-party due diligence and vendor risk management, including oversight of bank-partner relationships and supporting diligence materials.
Interpret regulatory requirements for business teams and coordinate responses to audit findings and regulatory examinations.
Prepare governance committee and board reporting, and deliver practical internal compliance training.
What We're Looking For
At least eight years in compliance, risk management or internal controls within regulated financial services, fintech, consumer protection or relevant audit and consulting work.
Experience developing governance, risk and compliance programmes, with the ability to implement controls as well as set direction.
Knowledge of consumer lending, payments, state licensing and money services business requirements.
Expertise in AML/KYC, BSA, fraud and consumer disclosures, together with relevant consumer protection, privacy and payment rules, including Regulations Z and E, UDAAP, FCRA, GLBA and NACHA.
Clear communication and presentation skills for working with regulators, banking partners and internal decision-makers.
Useful Background
A legal or compliance education and experience working in a startup would be useful, but are not stated as essential.
This could suit a senior compliance professional from consumer lending or payments who wants direct responsibility for a programme while remaining closely involved in product and operational decisions.
