Job Summary:
The Senior Subject Matter Expert (Mechanical) - Rolling Stock Engineering will oversee and support engineering projects within the rail sector. This role encompasses technical subject matter expertise related to new rail vehicle procurement and modification to existing equipment, including specification development, design reviews, first article inspections, quality assurance, including on zero emission systems. This position works independently and as part of a team, which includes other subject matter experts and management consultants. Rail vehicles primarily encompass locomotives, multiple units, and passenger rail cars. (LRV/Streetcar/Unpowered).
Tasks & Responsibilities:
Manage rolling stock engineering projects/assignments from concept to completion in passenger rail including new vehicle procurement and modifications to existing equipment.
Oversee technical aspects of rail and transportation projects.
Support teams, ensuring accuracy, schedule adherence, and budget compliance.
Support technical liaison with clients and stakeholders.
Produce high-quality deliverables within budget and scope.
Guide and mentor team and partner closely with client and teaming partners to achieve project objectives.
Develop deliverables such as project plans, design frameworks, specifications, analyses, calculations, reports, drawings, simulations, research studies, products, user manuals, and related documents.
Deliver work product against QA/QC procedures and drive continuous improvement.
Engage in client relations, marketing activities, proposal development, and contract negotiations.
Requirements:
Batchelor’s Degree in Mechanical engineering
P.E. license is preferred.
Minimum 15 years of experience in Rail vehicle engineering covering rollingstock design, production, testing and operations as well as aspects of fleet management.
Engineering experience covering all major rollingstock mechanical subsystems including brakes, trucks, car body/CEM, doors, doors, air conditioning, passenger interior equipment etc. Structural engineering experience is highly desired.
Experience working with Intercity, commuter, Light/Heavy Rail is required
Experience with regulatory bodies, including the FRA/FTA in relation to rail vehicle design and operation.
Technical project management experience required.
Experience with low- and zero-emission, such as batteries and hydrogen, in rail applications is advantageous.
Working Conditions and Travel:
You may primarily work from your home office and/or a well-lighted, heated and air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation. Travel will be required to supervise project implementation, including inspections of vehicles. Some overnight travel by land and air.
Physical Requirements, with or without a reasonable accommodation:
Ability to work at a computer workstation for periods up to 4 hours at a time
Ability to speak on the telephone for a total of up to 3 hours per day
Ability to sit for up to 3 hours without breaks at meetings
Ability to walk and stand for up to 4 hours without breaks at program site visits and meetings
Ability to inspect rail vehicles at facilities, which may include pits, platforms, and vehicles in various states of completion.
We offer an annual gross salary between $165,000 and $193,000 + bonus (USD) for full-time employment, depending on professional qualifications and experience.
