About the Role
JOB DESCRIPTION Design Engineer – IMOS Department Process Excellence Function Design Engineering – IMOS Location Hosur Reporting To Head – Process Excellence 1. Role Purpose The Design Engineer – IMOS will be responsible for using IMOS as a design and manufacturing engineering platform to develop standardized, manufacturable and cost-effective furniture designs. The role will bridge Product Design, IMOS Engineering, Manufacturing and Process Excellence, ensuring that furniture products are engineered around the actual capabilities of the factory.
The primary objective is to:
Understand machine capabilities and limitations
Standardize furniture joinery and engineering methods
Maximize NC/through-feed drilling adoption
Minimize CNC dependency
Eliminate unnecessary tooling/chuck changeovers through design standardization.
Responsibilities
2. IMOS Design & Engineering
Develop and engineer furniture products using IMOS.
Create accurate components, assemblies, construction details and manufacturing information in IMOS.
Develop and maintain product structures and BOMs.
Define dimensions, materials, hardware and machining information.
Translate product design intent into manufacturing-ready engineering data.
Maintain standardized IMOS libraries for components, hardware, joineries, drilling patterns and machining features.
Ensure engineering changes are accurately incorporated into IMOS.
Maintain proper naming, coding and revision standards within IMOS.
Ensure IMOS outputs are aligned with actual factory manufacturing requirements.
3. Machine Capability & Design Compatibility
Develop a detailed understanding of the capabilities and limitations of existing manufacturing machines.
Study machine capabilities across NC / Through-feed drilling, CNC drilling, Beam saw / cutting, Edge banding and other relevant machining processes.
Establish design-for-machine rules based on actual machine capabilities.
Identify design features that create additional machining operations, special tooling requirements, additional machine setups, tool/chuck changeovers, manual intervention, higher cycle time, rework or quality issues.
Ensure new designs are technically compatible with the available manufacturing system before release.
Maintain and continuously improve machine-oriented design standards.
4. Joinery Standardization
Study existing joinery methods being used across the furniture range.
Identify multiple variations of similar joinery and drive standardization.
Develop and maintain a library of approved standard joineries in IMOS.
Design Engineer – IMOS | Process Excellence Page 2
Ensure new products use standardized joineries wherever technically feasible.
Evaluate joinery based on structural strength, machining feasibility, assembly time, hardware consumption, machine compatibility and manufacturing cost.
Reduce unnecessary variations in drilling patterns, hardware and construction methods.
Standardize construction methods across similar product families wherever possible.
5. NC / Through-Feed Drilling Optimization
Drive maximum adoption of NC / through-feed drilling for all technically eligible components.
Study existing products and identify components currently processed through CNC drilling that can technically be converted to NC drilling.
Develop engineering standards that make components suitable for NC processing.
Optimize hole positions, hole diameters, hole depths, edge distances, drilling directions, component orientation, reference edges and panel dimensions.
Minimize unnecessary dependency on CNC drilling.
Conduct SKU-wise audits to identify CNC-to-NC conversion opportunities.
Develop design rules that enable NC-first engineering wherever technically feasible.
Guiding Principle NC / Through-feed drilling should be the preferred manufacturing route wherever product geometry and technical requirements permit it.
6. Tooling & Chuck Changeover Optimization
Study existing CNC drilling tooling and chuck requirements.
Identify product designs that create unnecessary chuck/tool changes.
Standardize drilling requirements around approved tooling wherever technically possible.
Develop design rules that minimize tooling variation.
Ensure new SKUs do not introduce unnecessary chuck/tool requirements.
Identify opportunities to combine drilling requirements and reduce setup frequency.
Drive reduction in machine setup time caused by product design variation.
Objective Design standardization should minimize tooling and chuck changeovers wherever technically feasible.
7. Design for Manufacturing & Assembly – DFM/DFA
Apply Design for Manufacturing and Design for Assembly principles across all products.
Ensure designs are optimized for the actual factory process.
Identify opportunities to reduce machining time, number of operations, CNC dependency, tool/chuck changeovers, hardware variety, assembly time, manual operations and rework.
Simplify product construction without compromising product functionality, structural integrity, customer requirements, quality or aesthetics.
Validate proposed design changes through manufacturing trials wherever required.
8. Cost Optimization Through Design
Identify and implement engineering changes that reduce total manufacturing cost through NC conversion.
Reduce CNC dependency, machining time, tooling requirements and machine setup/changeover time.
Drive hardware, joinery and component standardization.
Design Engineer – IMOS | Process Excellence Page 3
Simplify assembly and optimize material usage.
Reduce rework and process complexity.
Quantify the manufacturing and cost impact of major engineering changes.
9. Existing Product Engineering Optimization
Conduct periodic engineering audits of existing SKUs.
Prioritize high-volume, high-cost and high-complexity products for optimization.
Review existing products for NC conversion, joinery standardization, hardware standardization, machining reduction, tooling reduction, assembly simplification and process simplification opportunities.
Maintain an engineering improvement pipeline.
Track identified opportunities through implementation.
Validate the impact
