Senior Backend Engineer (Node.js / TypeScript / AWS) | AI-First | Remote
We are looking for an experienced Freelance Senior Backend Engineer to join an innovative, Berlin-based AI-first company developing a modern language learning application.
This opportunity is ideal for an engineer with strong hands-on expertise in Node.js, TypeScript and AWS, who actively uses AI-powered development tools to improve productivity and software delivery.
We are specifically looking for someone who has worked extensively with Node.js and TypeScript in their most recent 2–3 projects, rather than someone whose experience with these technologies is primarily from older assignments.
Your Responsibilities
Design, develop and maintain scalable backend services using Node.js and TypeScript.
Build and operate serverless architectures on AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, Event Streaming).
Independently design and deploy API Gateway and DynamoDB solutions.
Define and maintain robust API and data contracts.
Take end-to-end ownership of backend services, from architecture and development to production operations.
Monitor, troubleshoot and continuously optimize production systems.
Collaborate closely with product, engineering, AI and research teams.
Your Profile – Must-Have Skills
Senior-level backend engineering experience with Node.js and TypeScript as primary technologies.
Demonstrable hands-on experience with Node.js and TypeScript in your latest 2–3 projects.
Strong practical knowledge of AWS, particularly serverless architectures.
Proven experience with AWS Lambda, API Gateway and DynamoDB, including independent implementation.
Experience designing and operating production-grade distributed systems.
Strong understanding of API design, domain modelling and scalable system architectures.
Experience with CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
Ability to work independently and efficiently in existing, unfamiliar codebases.
Strong English communication skills.
AI-First Engineering Mindset
AI is an integral part of the client's engineering culture. We are looking for someone who actively embraces AI as a productivity multiplier.
Practical experience with AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, OpenAI-based coding agents, or similar.
Regular use of AI-powered tools in daily software development.
Ability to effectively review, validate and refine AI-generated code.
Strong engineering judgment and ownership of production code quality.
Genuine interest in AI-driven development workflows and modern software engineering practices.
