Technical Projects Director – Mechanical Technical Lead
Job Description Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Technical Lead with extensive experience in mechanical engineering design, technical assurance, and project delivery for mission-critical facilities. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for leading the review, development, optimization, and technical governance of mechanical systems throughout the project lifecycle, with a focus on hyperscale data centre developments.
This is an exciting opportunity for a technically strong individual looking to excel in a regional role based in Singapore. You will serve as the mechanical technical lead, collaborating closely with Clients, Consultants, Contractors, Vendors, and Internal Stakeholders to support the successful development, continuous improvement, and delivery of new-build data centres across the APAC region.
Only candidates with full fluency in English, experience in Technical Projects and Engineering / Construction Management, and without restrictions to work in Singapore will be considered.
Job Description
Description:
Review, comment on, and provide technical leadership for mechanical engineering designs, drawings, calculations, specifications, and design documentation for hyperscale data centre projects, ensuring alignment with all client Standards, Guidelines, Owner Project Requirements (OPRs), and Design Narratives.
Plan, develop, and standardize mechanical engineering packages, specifications, design standards, technical guidelines, and engineering best practices to support consistent project delivery across multiple regions.
Participate in the detailed design development of mechanical systems, providing technical input, engineering guidance, critical review, and design assurance throughout all project phases.
Evaluate mechanical system designs for redundancy, failure modes, shared-fate risks, and Single Points of Failure (SPOFs), utilizing Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability (RAM) methodologies to verify system performance and resilience requirements.
Perform detailed analysis and technical development of airside and waterside mechanical systems, including thermal analysis, CFD modelling, acoustic studies, climate data assessments, hydraulic analyses, pipe sizing, load calculations, and bin-hour analyses.
Review engineering submissions and design deliverables using Google Workspace, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), and other project collaboration platforms to assess technical accuracy, coordination, constructability, quality, and compliance.
Identify, escalate, and track critical design issues that may impact project scope, schedule, cost, quality, operational performance, or reliability, ensuring timely resolution with all project stakeholders.
Provide expert technical review and advisory support for the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of mechanical systems throughout the project lifecycle.
Perform QA/QC peer reviews of design documentation utilizing established standards, checklists, trackers, workflows, and project management tools.
Support engineering decision-making through technical evaluations, design reviews, risk assessments, value engineering initiatives, technology evaluations, and system optimization studies.
Identify, evaluate, and recommend opportunities to improve mechanical system performance, energy efficiency, cost effectiveness, constructability, standardization, operational reliability, and maintainability.
Develop and present technical studies, assessments, recommendations, and presentations supporting design improvements, innovation initiatives, and operational enhancements.
Manage mechanical defect resolution activities, punch-list closeout processes, final inspections, and engineering verification activities to support successful project completion and handover.
Attend supplier facilities, vendor manufacturing locations, construction sites, and client facilities as required to support quality assurance, testing, factory acceptance activities, and design compliance verification.
Provide regular reporting and maintain comprehensive trackers for mechanical engineering issues, project risks, mitigation plans, engineering actions, and technical decisions.
Report all issues, progress updates, technical concerns, and blocking items to the Technical Program Manager and Technical Lead, ensuring clear communication and issue visibility.
Attend design and engineering coordination meetings, providing continual input to optimize designs, improve project outcomes, and minimize unnecessary work and cost.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Design, Construction, Supply Chain, Operations, Change Management, Controls, Electrical, CSA, EHS, and Commissioning teams to resolve engineering issues and drive continuous design improvement.
Compile, prioritize, assess, and process construction-originated engineering issues to support long-term design enhancements, product standardization, and lessons-learned implementation.
Act as a key technical liaison between client teams, dedicated resources, consultants, contractors, vendors, and project stakeholders for all mechanical engineering matters.
Update owner standard documentation, including specifications, standards, design criteria, programming documents, and engineering guidelines as improvements are identified and approved.
Provide administrative support related to project documentation, revision control, deliverable tracking, document management, technical record keeping, and final upload to approved cloud-based project databases, including AODocs.
Support the timely review, coordination, acceptance, and close-out of engineering deliverables to achieve project milestones and schedule commitments.
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Professional Engineer (PE), Chartered Engineer (CEng), or equivalent professional accreditation preferred.
Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering design, technical leadership, project delivery, or engineering management for mission-critical facilities, preferably hyperscale data centres.
Extensive knowledge of data centre mechanical systems, including cooling plants, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, CRAHs, AHUs, heat rejection systems, HVAC controls, water distribution systems, and critical infrastructure cooling solutions.
Strong understanding of reliability engineering principles, redundancy architectures, failure mode analysis, SPOF identification, and RAM methodologies.
Experience conducting thermal analysis, CFD modelling, hydraulic studies, acoustic assessments, climate evaluations, and other engineering studies supporting mission-critical facility design.
Proficiency with engineering and design platforms including AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), BIM360, and related project collaboration tools.
Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering codes, standards, industry guidelines, and international best practices applicable to critical facility design and operation.
Experience leading multidisciplinary design reviews, technical assurance activities, design optimization initiatives, and QA/QC processes.
Excellent project management, stakeholder management, and communication skills with the ability to work effectively across multiple projects and geographical regions.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a demonstrated capability to evaluate complex engineering challenges and develop practical technical solutions.
Experience working directly with clients, consultants, contractors, vendors, commissioning teams, and operations teams within complex engineering environments.
Previous experience supporting the design, development, construction, or operation of hyperscale data centres or other mission-critical facilities will be highly advantageous.
