CUNY Comprehensive Access to Resources and Essential Services (CUNY CARES) seeks to implement and evaluate a new approach to integrated, comprehensive, student-centered health and social services for CUNY students. CUNY CARES seeks to demonstrate that meeting the unmet needs of students for food, housing, health care, and mental health services leads to improved educational and life outcomes. From 2023 to 2026, CUNY CARES served the 24,000 students attending CUNY’s three Bronx campuses: Lehman, Bronx Community, and Hostos Community Colleges. An evaluation of this Bronx Demonstration Project is now being completed. From FY 2026 to FY 2029, CUNY CARES 2.0 will expand selected components of the model to CUNY’s five other community colleges, continue to develop and strengthen Bronx campus services and partnerships and gather the evidence needed to make evidence-based decisions on scaling CUNY CARES.
The CUNY CARES Director of Evaluation will implement and provide overall direction to the evaluation of CUNY CARES. Located within the CUNY Office of Transformation and co-sponsored by the three Bronx campuses and the CUNY School of Public Health, CUNY CARES seeks to link students to health care, mental health, food security, housing by connecting them to campus services, community health care and social services providers, and public benefits such as SNAP and Medicaid. The position is available by December 1, 2026. CUNY CARES is led by the CUNY’s Chief Transformation Officer with additional technical support and guidance from the various Central Office and campus faculty and staff.
The Director of Evaluation will be expected to take on these tasks:
1. Oversee and direct a systematic assessment of CUNY CARES 2.0 that documents its progress and problems in implementation; evaluates its impact on student well-being and academic success; and provides evidence to inform scaling and sustainability of the program across CUNY campuses.
2. With the CUNY CARES Benefits Hub Director, design and implement an impact evaluation of the Benefits Hub, a component of CUNY CARES that connects students to public benefits.
3. Assist CUNY CARES investigators to complete the evaluation of the Bronx Demonstration Project
4. Design, administer, and analyze annual surveys of samples of CUNY students to track progress towards key CUNY CARES indicators.
5. Serve as liaison with funders, CUNY administrators, CUNY Office of Applied Research, Evaluation, and Data Analytics (OAREDA), and community providers of health care, mental health, food security, and housing assistance on matters related to the evaluation of CUNY CARES.
6. Serve as the team expert on quantitative methods and inferential statistics, helping the team to make data-driven decisions, as we scale the program.
7. With other CUNY CARES staff , and in collaboration with staff of other CUNY student services programs, identify data and metrics collected by these programs(e.g., food pantries, resource centers, counseling centers) to create user-friendly databases that aggregate these data to monitor project outcomes.
8. Engage faculty researchers and data collection teams at other CUNY campuses and the CUNY Central Office in carrying out the evaluation, interpreting results, and identifying solutions to problems encountered.
9. With collaboration from the CUNY CARES team, design, implement and prepare reports on periodic surveys of CUNY students to assess relevant attitudes, behaviors, and service utilization.
10. With guidance from CUNY CARES faculty researchers, analyze program and survey data
collected by CUNY CARES campus and community partners.
11. Prepare user-friendly written, oral, scientific, and other reports on CUNY CARES accomplishments for policy makers, CUNY leaders, faculty, staff, professional journals, CUNY CARES student advocates, and other students.
11. Supervise CUNY CARES staff and student research assistants working on evaluation tasks.
12. Other responsibilities as identified in the course of carrying out the above tasks.
Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
Pay Range:
Minimum - Maximum: $120,000-$130,000
