Mechanical Engineering Co-Op (January – June 2027)
What you will do:
Johnson Controls is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Co-op to support the development, testing, and validation of mechanical subsystems and equipment. In this hands-on role, you will collaborate with experienced engineers to design, build, analyze, and test mechanical systems while contributing to projects that support innovation and operational excellence. This opportunity is ideal for a student who enjoys solving complex engineering challenges, learning new skills, and working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
How you will do it:
Design, build, and operate mechanical systems, test fixtures, and custom production equipment.
Partner with full-time engineers to develop system requirements and support project execution.
Perform subsystem-level analysis, design, assembly, and validation activities.
Document design decisions, engineering changes, and test results in a clear and timely manner.
Develop, document, and execute mechanical testing methods and procedures.
Create and modify CAD models, perform tolerance analyses, and develop 2D engineering drawings.
Create and manage tickets, provide technical feedback, and assist in troubleshooting software, process, and hardware issues.
Collaborate across engineering and manufacturing teams to support project goals and continuous improvement initiatives.
Demonstrate Johnson Controls' Winning Behaviors by focusing on impactful work, collaborating effectively, taking ownership of results, and continuously seeking opportunities to learn and improve.
Required Qualifications:
Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals.
Demonstrated ability to take ownership of projects and complete tasks efficiently and effectively.
Adaptable and capable of succeeding in a fast-paced environment.
Interest in detailed engineering work, including part design, material selection, and engineering drawings.
Previous co-op, internship, or industry experience strongly preferred.
Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping tools and processes, including 3D printing, milling, lathes, laser cutting, and hand tools.
Experience using SolidWorks and creating or modifying 2D engineering drawings.
Strong communication skills and willingness to learn new technical skills independently while working within a collaborative team environment.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with Python, Linux, Jira, Git, or PLC programming.
Exposure to software and hardware troubleshooting in a technical environment.
Demonstrated problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
