Job Description
General Motors is seeking a Facility Area Manager (FAM) to lead the effective operation, maintenance, improvement, and sustainment of facilities supporting Oshawa Assembly and the broader Oshawa campus.
The FAM is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, compliant, and cost-effective operation of buildings, infrastructure, utilities, facility services, and related support systems. The role requires strong cross-functional leadership, technical judgment, project-management capability, and customer focus in a complex manufacturing environment.
What You’ll Do
• Lead day-to-day facilities operations and service delivery for assigned areas of Oshawa Assembly.
• Ensure effective operation and maintenance of building systems, infrastructure, utilities, and facility services.
• Support plant operations through timely response to facility issues, breakdowns, service interruptions, and emerging risks.
• Provide direction and oversight to internal teams, contractors, suppliers, and service providers.
• Manage facility-related work priorities, escalation, communication, and follow-up with plant stakeholders.
• Support building maintenance, space management, housekeeping, tenant services, property maintenance, and related campus services.
• Support plant utilities and infrastructure, including steam generation, wastewater treatment, compressed air, chilled water, electricity, and other utility systems, as applicable.
• Lead or support regulatory, legislative, environmental, safety, and code-compliance activities.
• Support chemical and waste-resource management, pollution prevention, remediation, and risk-reduction initiatives.
• Develop and execute asset-sustainment strategies, including condition assessments, risk reviews, lifecycle planning, and funding recommendations.
• Plan, prioritize, and manage facility projects, replacements, renovations, and infrastructure improvements.
• Coordinate project scope, schedules, budgets, procurement, construction execution, commissioning, and handover.
• Integrate facility requirements with manufacturing equipment, process needs, buildings, utilities, and site infrastructure.
• Monitor project and operational performance using appropriate metrics, dashboards, and standard work.
• Lead continuous improvement using GM Operating System principles, problem solving, standardization, and customer feedback.
• Champion energy efficiency, demand management, sustainability, and resource-conservation opportunities.
• Support emergency preparedness, evacuation and take-shelter programs, incident response, and business continuity.
• Participate in plant leadership, manufacturing engineering, facilities, maintenance, safety, environmental, labor-relations, and supplier forums.
• Build effective relationships with production, maintenance, engineering, environmental, safety, finance, purchasing, contractors, and campus partners.
• Coach, develop, and coordinate facilities team members while promoting accountability, inclusion, and a strong safety culture.
Required Qualifications
• College degree with a major in engineering, facilities management, business, construction management, or a related discipline; equivalent training and experience may be considered.
• Significant experience in facilities, industrial operations, manufacturing, maintenance, construction, utilities, or engineering project management.
• Demonstrated experience managing complex projects, budgets, schedules, contractors, and competing priorities.
• Strong knowledge of facility systems, infrastructure, utility operations, maintenance, and regulatory requirements.
• Demonstrated analytical, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
• Proven ability to build effective relationships with customers, team members, suppliers, and cross-functional partners.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and remain accountable for results.
• Ability to work on-site in an active automotive manufacturing environment and respond to operational priorities as required.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in automotive manufacturing or a large industrial campus.
• Experience supporting facilities in a unionized manufacturing environment.
• Experience with asset sustainment, lifecycle planning, capital projects, construction management, or facility reliability.
• Familiarity with Maximo or another computerized maintenance-management system.
• Knowledge of Ontario building, fire, electrical, environmental, occupational health and safety, and regulatory requirements.
• Experience with energy management, sustainability, utility optimization, or demand-response programs.
• Experience implementing GM Operating System principles, continuous improvement, standard work, or structured problem solving.
• Professional engineering designation, project-management certification, or equivalent professional credential.
