Role Overview Mercor is partnering with a leading AI research organization to understand how modern creators—ranging from experienced software engineers to AI-empowered product builders—develop software. In this unique remote research project, you will work on your own real-world projects (startup MVP, app, or side project) using OpenCode, a terminal-based coding assistant, while your sessions are recorded to help shape the future of AI development tools.
Core Responsibilities
Build or improve actual features on your own real project using the provided open-weight and Gemini AI models.
Dynamically evaluate and choose which AI model to use for each specific task, switching between them naturally as you build.
Maintain a structured workflow by utilizing one dedicated chat per development task.
Allow your terminal-based sessions to be recorded for AI behavioral research and product evaluation.
Candidate Profile
Active Builder: Currently and actively building a real project (side project, startup, app, or LLM-powered feature).
AI Tool Proficiency: Regular user of modern AI creation tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Cline, Replit, or Lovable.
Technical Setup: Comfortable following simple terminal setup steps and navigating the terminal on a Mac or Linux operating system.
Background: Professional coding experience is welcome, but highly technical non-coders and product managers who actively build with AI are strongly encouraged to apply.
Language: Fluent in written and spoken English.
Engagement Details & Compensation
Work Structure: 100% remote, highly flexible schedule. Independent contractor status.
Compensation: A highly lucrative flat rate of $500.00 per accepted session (a typical session consists of about 50 turns and takes approximately 2–3 hours of active work).
Payments: Processed securely and weekly via Stripe or Wise. Start is immediate.
