You’ll also work alongside experienced engineers in laboratory and cleanroom environments, using precision optical equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with setting up, aligning, and operating optical test beds to measure diffraction grating efficiency and wavefront quality.
- Use optical design software such as Zemax and programming tools such as MATLAB or Python to model grating behavior and analyze experimental data.
- Inspect optical components using microscopes and interferometers to identify defects and maintain quality standards.
- Document test procedures, compile results, and present findings to the engineering team.
- Support laboratory research and optical characterization activities.
- Follow laser safety procedures and cleanroom protocols when working with specialized equipment.
Candidate Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering with an optics focus, or a related technical discipline.
- Completed coursework in physical optics, wave mechanics, or laser physics.
- Hands-on experience in a university optics laboratory or a previous internship is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with laser safety practices.
- Strong analytical, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
Work Environment
This role involves working in laboratory and cleanroom environments, as well as performing computer-based modeling and data analysis.
Candidates should be comfortable with:
- Inspecting optical surfaces using microscopes and other precision instruments.
- Working with laser safety equipment and following strict safety protocols.
- Standing, bending, or maintaining specific postures during optical alignment.
- Working in low-light laboratory environments.
- Spending extended periods using computer software for optical modeling and data analysis.
- Occasionally handling equipment weighing approximately 20–50 lbs.
✈️ Travel: Up to 0–10%, as required.
Internship Program Highlights
- Six-month co-op assignment within a functional business area.
- Meaningful technical projects and hands-on experience.
- Networking opportunities with peers and company executives.
- Exposure to different business divisions.
- Opportunities to learn about the company's culture and commitment to belonging.
