About Owlera
Owlera is an AI-powered career platform that helps students and fresh graduates gain practical experience through internship simulations inspired by real companies.
Participants work on realistic business challenges, receive AI-powered feedback, use modern professional tools, and build portfolio-ready projects that demonstrate their abilities to future employers.
We're looking for sharp, analytical, and detail-obsessed students to join our Forensic Accounting Internship and gain hands-on experience in the investigation work behind real financial fraud cases.
About the Internship
As a Forensic Accounting Intern, you'll do realistic forensic accounting work inspired by real fraud investigations: tracing mock suspicious transactions, reconciling mock ledgers against bank records, documenting a mock evidence trail, and preparing mock findings that hold up to scrutiny.
You'll learn how forensic accountants spot red flags in financial data, quantify suspected losses, preserve the chain of evidence, and write clear, defensible reports that investigators, auditors, and legal teams can rely on.
Responsibilities
* Analyze mock bank statements for unexplained transfers and round-number anomalies.
* Reconcile mock general ledger accounts against supporting source documents.
* Trace mock funds across multiple accounts to reconstruct transaction flows.
* Review mock vendor and employee master data for duplicate or fictitious records.
* Identify mock red flags such as split transactions, ghost employees, and duplicate invoices.
* Test mock revenue and expense cutoffs for signs of manipulation.
* Run mock Benford's law and duplicate-detection checks on large datasets.
* Interview mock witnesses and document their statements in a structured log.
* Maintain a mock chain-of-custody log for all evidence collected.
* Build mock timelines of suspicious activity from scattered records.
* Quantify mock suspected losses with clear calculation workpapers.
* Prepare mock exhibits, charts, and summaries for the investigation file.
* Draft mock interim findings memos with evidence references.
* Assess mock internal-control weaknesses that allowed the issue to occur.
* Review mock expense reports for policy violations and personal spending.
* Compare mock payroll records against HR data for ghost-employee indicators.
* Reconstruct mock cash counts and inventory balances from incomplete records.
* Use AI tools to scan mock transaction data and surface hidden patterns.
* Draft mock final investigation reports with findings, losses, and recommendations.
* Present mock case findings with a clear, defensible evidence narrative.
Requirements
* Current student or recent graduate in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, Business Administration, or a related field.
* Strong interest in fraud detection, investigations, and forensic analysis.
* Meticulous attention to detail and comfort with large, messy datasets.
* Strong spreadsheet skills (Excel or Google Sheets); pivot tables and lookups a must.
* Logical thinker with a skeptical, evidence-first mindset.
* Good written and verbal communication skills, including clear documentation.
* Discreet and trustworthy — investigative work stays confidential.
* Ability to follow structured procedures and meet investigation deadlines.
* Interest in how fraud is committed — and how it gets caught.
* Familiarity with basic accounting concepts (debits, credits, ledgers) is a plus but not required.
* Familiarity with AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar platforms is a plus.
* Previous professional forensic or audit experience is not required.
What You'll Gain
* Hands-on experience running mock fraud investigations end to end.
* Practical experience tracing transactions and reconstructing financial trails.
* Understanding of common fraud schemes and their red flags.
* Understanding of evidence handling, documentation, and chain of custody.
* Experience building workpapers, exhibits, and loss-quantification models.
* Practical exposure to data-analysis techniques for investigations.
* Experience using AI and modern forensic tools.
* Portfolio-ready investigation reports and case files.
* Personalized AI feedback on your work.
* Professional certificate upon successful completion.
* Mentorship and weekly learning sessions.
* Opportunity to strengthen your portfolio, resume, and interview readiness.
