About the role
Description supplied by the original job listing.
Blue Photon India supplies Advanced UV Cured Adhesive Workholding to manufacturers machining parts that are thin, distortion-prone or awkward to clamp conventionally. Our customers make components for Aero Engines, Aerospace structures, Semiconductor capital equipment, consumer electronics enclosures and medical devices.
We need a Design Engineer in Bengaluru, working under our Head of Design.
Most of the job is this. A customer sends a component drawing. You work out how that part can be located, supported and held so it can actually be machined to print. You design the fixture, detail it, get it built, and then you go to the customer's plant with our application engineer and stand at the machine while it is tried. Sometimes it works first time. Sometimes it does not and you redesign it.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
1. Design workholding fixtures and tooling for metal cutting.
2. Model and detail assemblies in SolidWorks, and produce manufacturing drawings a shop can build from without calling you back with questions.
3. Read customer 2D drawings properly. Datums, dimensional relationships, GD and T, and what they imply about how the part has to be held.
4. Select materials and specify heat treatment, surface treatment and finishing for fixture components.
5. Work with applications and production to turn a customer enquiry into a fixture concept that can actually be built and costed.
6. Travel to customer plants across India for part studies, fixture installation and machine trials.
7. Keep the design records straight. BOMs, revision control, ECNs and the standard parts library.
WHAT WE NEED
1. BE, B.Tech or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
2. Two to three years designing workholding or fixtures for metal cutting applications.
3. SolidWorks at a level where you handle assemblies, mates and drawing generation on your own.
4. AutoCAD on a current version, for 2D detailing and marking up customer drawings.
5. Drawings to ISO or DIN convention, including tolerancing and GD and T callouts.
6. Working knowledge of tool steels, alloy steels and aluminium grades used in fixturing, and the heat treatment and surface treatments that go with them.
7. Practical understanding of milling, turning, grinding, drilling and boring, and what each one demands of a fixture.
8. Cutting forces. Direction, magnitude, and how they act on the part and on your clamping scheme.
9. Familiarity with VMCs, HMCs and lathes, their tables, work envelopes and interfaces.
10. Clear English, spoken and written. You will be explaining your design to a customer's engineering team.
11. Willingness to travel across India and to be on the shop floor during trials.
USEFUL, NOT REQUIRED
1. Experience with thin-wall or distortion-sensitive components.
2. Exposure to aerospace, semiconductor, electronics enclosure or medical device machining.
3. Familiarity with modular and zero-point systems.
4. Basic FEA or static analysis for fixture stiffness and clamping force.
5. Some CAM exposure, or an understanding of toolpath and approach clearance constraints.
6. Reading knowledge of AS9100 or ISO 9001 documentation practice.
WHAT YOU GET OUT OF IT
You will work on adhesive workholding, which almost nobody in India designs for day to day, and you will be taught it directly by our Head of Design. The parts are ones where holding the component without distorting it is the actual engineering problem, not an afterthought.
HOW TO APPLY
