Job Description Summary
The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine invites applications for a full-time staff position to serve as the Nurse Case Manager in the Sedation Center. The Sedation Center is multidisciplinary ambulatory surgery center focusing on dentistry for pediatric patients, adults with dental anxiety, and patients with special healthcare needs. The Nurse Case Manager will collaborate with the anesthesia team as well as clinicians in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry, Department of Periodontology, and Personalized Care Suite. The Case Manager will serve as a critical link between patients, dentists, and the anesthesia team, ensuring patients are optimally prepared for their procedure and supported afterward. The successful candidate will play a central role in supporting Penn Dental Medicine's missions of clinical excellence, education, research, and community engagement. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty from Penn Dental Medicine and affiliated health systems to develop innovative models of patient-centered care.
Job Description
Nurse Support - 40%
Conduct pre-operative medical record review, patient/caregiver teledentistry interviews as needed, including health history review, medication reconciliation, and surgical risk screening, record findings in the medical health record, and provide weekly synopsis of patient history to Sedation Center Director
Provide written and verbal patient/caregiver education on pre-operative instructions (fasting, medication holds, anesthesia prep etc) and post-operative care and document conversation in the patient record
Perform post-operative follow-up calls to monitor recovery, identify potential complications early, and triage concerns and document conversation in the patient record
Case Management – 40%
Review labs, diagnostics, and medical consultation documentation prior to surgery; identify missing and/or abnormal results
Document all conversations with patients/caregivers accurately in the EHR in compliance with organizational and regulatory standards
Manage and audit BD Pyxis medication station activity, including reviewing discrepancy reports and override logs, and coordinate medication ordering with anesthesia
Input patient information and medical history into electronic record, such as, XChart anesthesia charting software and review charts for completeness and accuracy
Operations – 10%
Monitor medication inventory levels within Pyxis stations and coordinate reordering to maintain adequate stock and prevent expirations
Monitor anesthesia supplies inventory levels and coordinate reordering
Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to surgical readiness and reducing case-day cancellations
Other duties as assigned – 10%
Provide and maintain expertise in innovative solutions focused on the responsible stewardship of Penn Dental Medicine and its community experience.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Nursing and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse license or eligibility for licensure.
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Experience working within interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated experience caring for medically complex adult patients with varied intellectual and physical disabilities and/or pediatric patients is preferred.
Strong understanding of anesthesia risk assessment, comorbidity management, and the pre-surgical medical consultation processes
Familiarity with electronic health records, such as, Axium EHR and X-Chart anesthesia charting software
Experience with Pyxis MedStation (or comparable automated dispensing cabinet) auditing of controlled substance medications, discrepancy resolution, and medication ordering coordination
Familiarity with surgical/perioperative supply inventory systems and reordering processes
