About the Role
We are looking for a Shopify Solutions Architect to own the technical architecture of our client's Shopify Plus ecommerce platform. This person will be the go-to technical authority on how Shopify's core platform, custom application development, and our client's broader ecosystem of "bolt-on" apps and third-party integrations fit together — designing solutions that are scalable, performant, and maintainable as the business grows. This role will sit at the intersection of engineering, product, and business stakeholders, translating commercial requirements into sound technical architecture across checkout, storefront, order management, and the systems that surround them.
What You'll Do
Own the end-to-end architecture of the Shopify Plus platform, including theme/storefront architecture, checkout customization (Checkout Extensibility, UI extensions, Shopify Functions), and the Admin/Storefront GraphQL APIs.
Design and document integration patterns between Shopify and adjacent systems — ERP, OMS, PIM, CDP, WMS, tax, subscriptions, loyalty, and marketing platforms — ensuring data flows are reliable, well-monitored, and easy to reason about.
Evaluate, select, and architect the implementation of third-party "bolt-on" apps from the Shopify App Store (e.g., reviews, subscriptions, loyalty, personalization, search/merchandising, fraud, returns), weighing build-vs-buy tradeoffs against performance, cost, and long-term maintainability.
Partner with engineering teams to define technical standards for custom app development on Shopify, including use of Shopify CLI, webhooks, and Shopify Flow automation.
Lead architecture reviews and produce solution design documents, sequence diagrams, and integration maps for new initiatives, migrations, and major platform changes (including app upgrades and Shopify platform releases).
Identify and remediate performance bottlenecks, theme/app conflicts, checkout regressions, and technical debt across the platform and its integrations.
Act as the primary technical liaison with Shopify Plus support/partner teams and third-party app vendors during implementation, troubleshooting, and escalations.
Guide data integrity and governance across systems that touch product, inventory, customer, and order data synced to and from Shopify.
Mentor engineers on Shopify best practices, API usage, and integration patterns; contribute to code and architecture reviews as needed.
What You'll Bring
5+ years of experience architecting or leading development on ecommerce platforms, with at least 3+ years focused specifically on Shopify or Shopify Plus.
Deep, hands-on understanding of the Shopify platform: Liquid theming, the Admin and Storefront GraphQL/REST APIs, webhooks, Shopify Flow, Shopify Functions, and Checkout Extensibility.
Proven experience integrating and architecting around third-party Shopify apps (e.g., Klaviyo, Recharge, Gorgias, Yotpo/Okendo, Loop Returns) and understanding how multiple apps interact within a single storefront and checkout flow.
Experience integrating Shopify with backend systems such as ERP/OMS (e.g., NetSuite, SAP), PIM, WMS, and data platforms, using APIs, middleware.
Working knowledge of headless/composable commerce approaches on Shopify (Hydrogen, Oxygen, or comparable frontend frameworks) is a strong plus.
Solid understanding of web performance, Core Web Vitals, and how app scripts/pixels impact storefront and checkout speed.
Ability to produce clear architecture documentation and communicate tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Experience with agile delivery, code review practices, and CI/CD for Shopify theme and app deployments.
Background in DTC or apparel/retail ecommerce is a plus.
Nice to Have
Shopify Plus certification(s) or demonstrated participation in the Shopify Partner ecosystem.
Experience with subscription commerce, international/multi-currency storefronts, or B2B on Shopify.
Familiarity with observability tooling (Datadog, New Relic, or similar) for monitoring app and integration health.
