Description supplied by the original job listing.

Independent Advisor - HR, Remuneration & EDI Committee
Specialisms: Learning & Development, Legal or Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
Organisation: Mountain Training Trust (MTT)
Location: Remote / Plas y Brenin, Eryri, Wales
Role type: Unpaid / Voluntary, part-time
Time commitment: Approximately 1–3 days per quarter
About the Mountain Training Trust
The Mountain Training Trust (MTT) is a registered charity that operates Plas y Brenin, the National Outdoor Centre, in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park.
Our mission is to provide pathways for all to a lifetime of outdoor adventure. We specialise in training those who go on to teach, lead and support others across a wide range of outdoor activities.
As we work towards greater financial independence and long-term sustainability, strong governance, diverse perspectives and effective leadership are increasingly important.
About the opportunity
We are looking for an Independent Advisor to join our HR, Remuneration & EDI Committee, bringing additional expertise, fresh perspectives and constructive challenge to our governance.
This is an opportunity to contribute to the strategic direction of a national outdoor education charity, supporting the Committee in its oversight of people, organisational development, remuneration and equality, diversity and inclusion.
Independent Advisors are not trustees or company directors. The role provides specialist insight and an external perspective without the legal responsibilities of Board membership.
Key responsibilities
As an Independent Advisor, you will:
Provide independent advice, support and constructive challenge on people, EDI and organisational matters.
Contribute to strategic discussions and governance decisions within the Committee.
Offer specialist insight into relevant policies, proposals and organisational developments.
Support occasional projects, reviews and initiatives between Committee meetings.
Work collaboratively with Committee members and the wider organisation.
About you
We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with experience in one or more of the following areas:
Learning, Development & Training
Experience in professional development, organisational learning, training strategy or developing others, ideally within an organisation focused on education or training.
Legal Expertise
A legal background with knowledge or experience relevant to employment law, HR, governance or equality and diversity matters.
Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI)
Experience in developing EDI strategies, improving representation and embedding inclusive practices within organisations.
You do not need expertise in all three areas, and previous Board or Committee experience is not essential.
Above all, we are looking for someone who can bring an independent perspective, challenge constructively, work collaboratively and share our belief in the value of outdoor learning.
Time commitment and arrangements
The Committee meets quarterly, with meetings primarily held remotely via Microsoft Teams.
There may also be occasional involvement between meetings, including reviewing documents, providing feedback or supporting smaller projects.
We estimate the overall commitment to be approximately 1–3 days per quarter.
This is a voluntary position, and reasonable pre-authorised expenses will be reimbursed.
Equality, diversity and inclusion
The Mountain Training Trust is committed to building boards and committees that better reflect the communities we serve.
We are actively working to improve diversity and representation and particularly welcome expressions of interest from people and groups who are currently underrepresented within our governance structures.
We welcome individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, belief or age.
As a charity based in Wales, the ability to communicate in both Welsh and English is an asset, although it is not a requirement.
How to apply
We are inviting written expressions of interest for the role.
Please include this with your CV, or email abi.banks@mountaintrainingtrust.org, briefly outlining why you are interested in the opportunity and what experience or perspective you could bring to the Committee.
Following receipt of your expression of interest, we will arrange a short, informal conversation to discuss the role and answer any questions.
We will then review expressions of interest and invite shortlisted individuals to a more in-depth interview with members of the Board before making a final decision.
We look forward to hearing from you.
