About The Opportunity
AquaXperts is expanding its international technical network and is looking for an Aquaculture Systems Design Expert to collaborate on the design and technical development of land-based aquaculture facilities.
We are looking for an engineer with practical aquaculture knowledge who can translate biological and production requirements into robust, maintainable and commercially viable systems, and who is comfortable working autonomously from concept through to implementation.
TYPICAL SCOPE OF WORK
Depending On The Assignment, This May Include
Developing concepts, layouts and system architecture for RAS, hatchery, nursery and grow-out facilities.
Translating production targets and biological requirements into engineering design criteria.
Hydraulic calculations, water and mass balances, and system dimensioning.
Sizing pumps, filtration, aeration, oxygenation, UV/ozone, heating/cooling and other life-support equipment.
Preparing and reviewing PFDs, P&IDs, layouts, equipment lists and technical specifications.
Evaluating supplier proposals and technical alternatives.
Supporting CAPEX estimates and technical feasibility studies.
Integrating mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control requirements.
Identifying design risks, bottlenecks and single points of failure.
Supporting installation, commissioning and start-up where required, in coordination with AquaXperts project teams, suppliers, contractors and clients.
What We’re Looking For
Engineering degree or equivalent technical background, backed by professional experience in aquaculture.
Proven track record designing intensive land-based facilities, with strong RAS design and dimensioning experience.
Experience with shrimp facilities and their biological and operational requirements (strongly preferred).
Solid command of hydraulics, water treatment, solids management, aeration, oxygenation and thermal control.
Ability to produce, review and clearly document engineering calculations.
Proficiency in AutoCAD or equivalent CAD software, whether drafting directly or directing and reviewing drawings.
Working knowledge of electrical systems, instrumentation, automation and alarms.
Understanding of construction interfaces, maintainability and commissioning requirements.
Comfortable using digital and AI-assisted tools, with the judgement to verify every technical output.
Professional working proficiency in English and the ability to work independently within international, multidisciplinary teams.
Additional Experience Valued
Commissioning and start-up of commercial aquaculture facilities.
Hatchery or broodstock facility design.
Revit, BIM or advanced 3D modelling.
Process simulation, programming or engineering scripting.
Advanced automation platforms, digital twins or data-driven optimisation.
Experience across multiple species or production technologies.
Working proficiency in French, Spanish or other languages relevant to international projects.
WORKING WITH AQUAXPERTS
Collaboration is project-based, on a freelance basis. Assignments range from remote engineering work and design reviews to site visits, installation support and commissioning, and are matched to your expertise, availability and location.
AquaXperts leads project direction, client management and technical integration, so you can focus on the engineering. Scope, timeline and fees are agreed in writing for each assignment.
Experts are asked to sign a confidentiality agreement and to disclose any potential conflict of interest, such as commercial ties to equipment suppliers.
