Cards2Cash is a growing UK and Ireland gift card resale platform, allowing customers to
sell unwanted gift cards and purchase gift cards at discounted prices. We process a
high volume of transactions and are continuing to invest in our technology, platform
reliability and customer experience.
Following significant business growth, we are looking for an experienced Web Developer
to join the team and help develop, maintain and improve our existing platform. This is an
opportunity to work directly on a live commercial product where your code will have a
real impact on thousands of customers.
The Role
We are looking for a hands-on Web Developer with strong practical experience in PHP
and Laravel. You will work on our existing codebase, developing new features, fixing
bugs, improving performance and ensuring the platform remains secure, reliable and
scalable as the business grows.
This role requires someone who understands how to write, test, debug and maintain
production-quality code. You must be comfortable working independently, investigating
problems and taking ownership of tasks from initial analysis through to implementation
and testing.
This is a role for an experienced developer who can write code themselves, not
someone who relies on AI-generated code or automated code-generation tools to
do the development work for them.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop, maintain and improve our existing Laravel and PHP applications.
• Build new features and functionality across our platform and backend APIs.
• Investigate and resolve bugs, production issues and performance bottlenecks.
• Write clean, maintainable and secure code that follows established
development standards.
• Work with MySQL databases, including writing and optimising SQL queries,
managing relationships and investigating data issues.• Develop and maintain REST APIs and integrations with third-party services.
• Improve application performance, reliability and scalability as transaction
volumes increase.
• Identify and resolve issues involving database transactions, concurrent
requests, data consistency and application logic.
• Write and execute tests to ensure changes work correctly and do not introduce
regressions.
• Use Git for version control and follow appropriate development and deployment
practices.
• Review existing code, understand how different parts of the application interact
and make changes without disrupting live services.
• Work directly with the business to understand requirements, propose technical
solutions and deliver practical improvements.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must have demonstrable, hands-on experience developing and maintaining
real applications using PHP and Laravel.
You must have:
• Strong practical experience with PHP and the Laravel framework.
• Experience working with MySQL or another relational database, including writing
SQL queries.
• Experience building, maintaining and debugging REST APIs.
• A solid understanding of object-oriented programming, application architecture
and software development principles.
• Experience using Git and working with an existing codebase.
• An understanding of web application security, authentication, validation and
common vulnerabilities.
• The ability to investigate complex bugs and work out the underlying cause rather
than simply applying workarounds.
• Experience testing changes and maintaining the stability of live applications.
• The ability to work independently, manage your time and communicate progress
clearly.• Strong attention to detail, particularly when dealing with financial transactions
and customer data.
Commercial development experience is essential. This position is not suitable for
beginners, candidates whose experience is limited to tutorials or personal experiments,
or applicants who have not previously worked on a functioning application.
AI and Development Standards
AI-generated development and “vibe coding” are not permitted for this role.
We require a developer who understands the code they write and can independently
design, implement, debug and maintain software. Applicants must be able to explain
their technical decisions, identify problems in unfamiliar code and demonstrate their
ability to produce working solutions without relying on AI tools to generate the
implementation.
We are looking for genuine engineering ability, not simply the ability to prompt an AI tool
and integrate its output. All code must be understood by the developer responsible for
it, and work must meet our standards for security, maintainability, testing and reliability.
Candidates should expect a practical technical assessment designed to evaluate their
own PHP and Laravel skills.
