The Virtual Athletics League (VAL) is looking for a highly engaged and community-focused Discord Community Manager intern based in South Africa to join our gaming marketing agency.
This role is primarily focused on Discord community management, alongside creator and influencer management. You’ll report directly to VAL’s Performance Marketing Manager and work across gaming communities and creator campaigns.
You’ll be expected to:
Manage and engage with gaming communities across Discord.
Be an active presence in online gaming communities, starting conversations and keeping engagement high.
Plan community activities, events, competitions and engagement initiatives, working alongside the developer and content creators.
Respond to players and gather feedback for the developers, identifying recurring community sentiment.
Help develop community strategies around game launches and updates.
Track community growth, engagement and key trends.
Moderate channels and help maintain and positive, welcoming online community.
Coordinate influencer campaigns from outreach through to content delivery.
Support creator outreach, communication and relationships.
Help identify emerging creators and opportunities within the communities.

Have a strong understanding of Discord, Reddit and online gaming communities.
Understand gamers, creators and gaming culture.
Are naturally social and enjoy building relationships online.
Are highly organised, proactive and comfortable managing multiple communities and projects.
We welcome candidates from a range of backgrounds, including Marketing, Communications, Community Management, Games, Media, Business or similar. Previous experience managing a Discord server, gaming community, social media account, creator campaign or online community is a plus, but not required. Personal experience counts too — if you’ve moderated a Discord server, run a gaming community, organised online events, built your own community or are deeply involved in gaming spaces, we want to hear about it.
The Virtual Athletics League (VAL) is an early stage venture capital backed startup with the same network of investors who backed Tesla, Hotmail, and Skype. We work directly with Meta and have delivered projects across globally recognised IPs including Hello Kitty, NERF, The Walking Dead, Metro, Alien, and Hello Neighbor, alongside many others.
This four month internship is designed to provide significantly more responsibility and exposure than a traditional one. Due to the nature of a growing start up, interns aren’t limited to observation or administrative work, you’ll be trusted with real gaming communities and creator campaigns, working alongside an experienced gaming marketing team and gaining hands-on experience in community strategy, Discord management and influencer marketing. Our goal is to identify exceptional people who can progress into full time opportunities at VAL or elsewhere within the gaming industry following the internship.
