ABOUT US
CANCER FUND Impact Investments® ("CANCER FUND" or "CF") is a community of impact investors dedicated to advancing cancer innovations through our investments. Our mission is to support the development and commercialization of promising cancer therapies, diagnostics, preventions, and other innovations to improve outcomes, increase access to care, and reduce costs for cancer patients worldwide. Learn more at www.cancerfund.com.
CANCER FUND invests through thematic investment cycles that target specific indications, modalities, or clinical areas. Venture Partners contribute across cycles based on their expertise and interests. Each investment cycle begins with a feasibility, preparation, and planning stage before proceeding through our structured 5-step investment process. Cycles typically span 3 to 6 months.
ABOUT YOU
We're seeking people like us — PARTNERS (not employees) — who are equally committed to generating impact and a positive return on our investments in cancer innovation.
If you are an existing member of the CANCER FUND community who understands who we are, what we do, how, and why, AND if you are excited to contribute your time and talents to support our mission, then we're interested in learning more about you … especially if one or more of these also describes you:
A board-certified oncologist — medical, surgical, radiation, pediatric, hematology-oncology, gynecologic, neuro, radiopharmaceutical, palliative, or other sub-specialty — with clinical experience and a track record of engagement in advancing therapies for cancer patients
A cancer researcher or physician-scientist (clinical, translational, or basic science) with a portfolio of work in oncology
Someone with personal experience navigating cancer diagnosis and treatment, or supporting a family member through it, paired with an operational, entrepreneurial, investment, or other relevant professional background
A patient advocate with a substantive history of contribution in the cancer community
A life sciences investor with a focus on oncology, rare disease, orphan drug development, or specific therapeutic area expertise
An experienced early-stage investor or investor in Cancer Fund I, LLC with a specific interest in advancing cancer innovation
A founder or early-stage company executive with a successful track record in cancer drug development, diagnostics, or care-delivery innovation
You are none of the above, but you are an outlier with a strong desire to help CANCER FUND advance cancer innovation and a clear vision, strategy, and plan for how you might do that
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Venture Partner, you'll contribute an average of 2-5 hours per month on an ongoing basis, working remotely to help grow our portfolio and community through the following activities:
Investment Pipeline & Portfolio Development — CANCER FUND invests in cycles built, run, and supported by Venture Partners assembled in small investment teams. Each investment cycle typically spans approximately 3-6 months and is comprised of the following five steps:
Step 1: Scouting and Sourcing New Innovations — You may identify new deal flow for the current investment cycle by conducting research, outreach, and attending virtual and in-person events to network with oncologists, researchers, foundation leaders, and cancer-focused entrepreneurs.
Step 2: Pre-Screening — Each cycle typically includes 50-150 opportunities relevant to the theme it is focused on. As part of the cycle team, you may help pre-screen and select 10-25 opportunities that best fit our impact investment thesis and cycle-specific priorities. This stage may include coordinating and hosting candidate companies for introductory meetings with our pre-screening committee.
Step 3: Screening — You may support 3-6 pre-screened companies through introductory meetings, pitches, and presentations to our Screening Committee using our 'Glimpse', 'Quik-Pitch', 'Quick-Look', and 'Closer-Look' formats.
Step 4: Due Diligence Deep-Dives — You may support, contribute to, or lead due diligence on selected candidates, draft, review, and/or edit investment memos, make investment recommendations to our Investment Committee, and gauge syndication and co-investment interest among aligned partners and investor communities.
Step 5: Investment Support and Portfolio Integration — Each CANCER FUND investment cycle aims to make at least one investment. You may support the Managing Director in negotiating terms, structuring investments, reviewing agreements, and coordinating closing and funding. You may assist in incorporating investment details into the Fund's reports and other materials post-investment.
Portfolio Management & Company Support — You may support our relationships with partnering organizations and portfolio companies, including assisting the company when appropriate, following their progress, and providing quarterly and annual reports throughout the holding period of our investment. Your domain knowledge and network are valuable to portfolio companies navigating clinical, regulatory, and commercial challenges.
Community & Team Development — Collaborate with other CF team members to grow and engage CANCER FUND's community of impact investors and prospective members.
ABOUT YOUR SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, OR PASSIONS
Ideal candidates have some combination of the following skills, experience, or passions, or are committed to developing them:
Oncology Domain Understanding — Knowledge of the biology, epidemiology, and clinical characteristics of cancer. Familiarity with therapeutic area dynamics, patient population considerations, and the clinical and commercial factors that shape cancer innovation.
Drug and Technology Development Familiarity — Working understanding of oncology drug development pathways, including the regulatory and market dynamics that apply across therapeutic areas.
Community Development — Advanced networking skills and building and fostering strong relationships based on shared values with existing and prospective CANCER FUND community members.
Founder Relationship Development — Ability to engage with innovative entrepreneurs and build relationships based on shared interests and objectives.
Investment Due Diligence — Assess company-provided and other information to evaluate the business proposition. Conduct in-depth analysis to evaluate product, technology, and financial plans.
Early Stage Investing — Evaluating and investing in pre-revenue or first-revenue ventures.
Medical Technology — Understanding preclinical research/study requirements with knowledge of clinical best practices, regulatory and reimbursement pathways, and drug and MedTech development processes. Familiarity with the broad Biotech/Pharma landscape.
Capital Funding Stages and Strategies — Familiarity with early-stage funding practices and requirements, particularly Pre-Seed, Seed, Seed+, and Series A.
Investment Syndication — Structure and lead investment deals with external stakeholders, including identifying and coordinating with angel investor groups, investment funds, and corporate strategic partners.
Portfolio Management — Engage with portfolio company management to support strategic planning, capital raising, and corporate development.
Collaboration — Partner with other CF Venture Partners, Committees, and team members to collaborate and assess potential fund investments on a predetermined schedule.
COMPENSATION
As is customary among venture capital firms, compensation for our Venture Partners is based on carried interest participation tied to the performance of our investment portfolio. Traditional salary, benefits, consulting fees, stipends, or similar are NOT included in our Venture Partner compensation. If you are seeking salary, benefits, consulting fees, stipends or similar immediate cash compensation, this will NOT be an ideal fit.
OUR SELECTION PROCESS
Joining the CANCER FUND team will likely differ from other hiring or engagement processes you've experienced; our evaluations may span 6-9 months or longer. We consider past experience, but we're more interested in your alignment with our mission, understanding of our unique community-driven investment process, and ability to help drive it in the future.
CANCER FUND team members must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of our unique community-driven investment process, including how companies progress through it and how our community members participate in supporting our investments.
