About the Role
We’re seeking an experienced SolidWorks Mechanical/Fabrication Drafter to convert existing 3D models into accurate, fabrication-ready drawings for an Australian engineering and equipment supply business. The ideal candidate has hands-on fabrication drafting experience and can work independently with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
Produce detailed fabrication drawings from existing 3D SolidWorks models.
Convert mechanical designs and models into practical 2D drawings suitable for fabrication.
Prepare part, component, and assembly drawings as required.
Create drawings that clearly communicate dimensions, specifications, and fabrication requirements.
Review 3D models and identify the information required to produce manufacturing-ready drawings.
Make drawing revisions and updates based on feedback from the client and fabrication team.
Maintain consistency across drawing formats, dimensions, annotations, and documentation.
Work closely with the client to understand their existing drafting standards and preferred drawing formats.
Ensure drawings are practical and easy for fabricators to interpret.
Organise and maintain drawing files, revisions, and associated technical documentation.
Complete drafting tasks efficiently and within agreed project timelines.
Support additional mechanical drafting and design documentation requirements as projects arise.
Essential Requirements
Proven experience as a Mechanical Drafter, CAD Drafter, Fabrication Drafter, or similar role.
Strong hands-on experience using SolidWorks.
Experience producing fabrication or manufacturing drawings from 3D models.
Ability to interpret mechanical designs, assemblies, components, and technical information.
Understanding of fabrication and manufacturing processes.
Ability to produce clear and practical drawings that fabricators can work from.
Strong understanding of dimensions, tolerances, annotations, and technical drawing conventions.
Ability to work independently from an existing model or design.
Good attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work efficiently and meet project deadlines.
Strong communication skills and ability to incorporate technical feedback into drawing revisions.
Highly Desirable
Previous drafting experience supporting an Australian engineering, manufacturing, or fabrication business.
Experience working with industrial equipment or machinery.
Experience with steel fabrication and fabricated assemblies.
Familiarity with equipment manufacturing and workshop environments.
Experience preparing customer layout drawings in addition to fabrication drawings.
Previous remote working experience.
Software (Essential)
SolidWorks - Candidates should be highly proficient in SolidWorks and comfortable working directly with existing 3D models to produce fabrication-ready drawings.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate understands real-world fabrication and can turn existing SolidWorks models into clear, accurate, and practical drawings. You should work efficiently, follow established drafting standards, and adapt to the client's preferred format and level of detail.
Candidate Assessment
Shortlisted candidates may be asked to complete a practical SolidWorks drafting task.
The client may provide an existing SolidWorks model and ask the candidate to produce a fabrication drawing for a selected component or part. This will allow the client to assess:

Ability to interpret an existing model

Efficiency and turnaround time
A portfolio containing relevant SolidWorks and fabrication drawing samples is highly preferred.
